editFrom Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁-slo- (“a breathing”, of which Latin hālō (“to breathe”) is possibly the outcome of the denominal), from *h₂enh₁- (“to breathe”). The insertion of /-h-/ is likely onomatopoeic, like it is in hālō. Akin to animus (“spirit”).
