Hmu

edit

We appear to have a category for the language with ISO code hea already, but it is called Northern Qiandong Miao on Wiktionary right now. So we must either a) use that name in entry headers or b) change category stuff to use the name "Hmu" instead. Perhaps you and some others can weigh in on this, I don't know the language so I don't know which name would be more appropriate. User: The Ice Mage talk to meh 17:02, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

We cannot just change the name Northern Qiandong Miao as it is linked to this code already elsewhere on the internet. But I was able to find out which subgroup it is from the phonetic transcription of Zhuyin letters in the source and Wikipedia article about the Hmu language. Different subgroups have different sounds, so I was able to identify it as Northern. The issue is fixed now. Garygo golob (talk) 17:16, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Etymologies

edit

I don't think From {{m|sl|akrobȃt}}, from {{der|sl|de|Akrobat}}, from {{der|sl|fr|acrobate}}, from from {{derived|sl|grc|ἀκροβάτης||walking on tiptoe, climbing aloft}} + suffix {{m|sl|-ka}}, from {{der|sl|sla-pro|*-ъka}}, which denotes a feminine person. is needed at all. Entirely too long. Vininn126 (talk) 18:10, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I also started a conversation about the pronunciation templates on the beer parlor that you should read. Vininn126 (talk) 18:22, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I'm kind of new here. I did it in such a way because I saw these templates automatically give categories to the entry and if I hadn't written all that, then they would not be added. Ok, noted, shorter etymologies. Garygo golob (talk) 19:38, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
FYI there's a way to add those categories other than writing out the full etymology, or having to manually write [[:Category:Slovene terms derived from German]], etc. Instead you could just write {{dercat|sl|de|fr|grc}}. See the documentation of that template.
That said, in this instance I don't think the categories are needed. It seems like the masculine term is the one borrowed, and the feminine is just an internal derivation. You could argue for adding the categories, since it is technically still derived from Ancient Greek, but that would be an editorial decision. Either way, the full explanation isn't needed. 70.172.194.25 19:51, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I wanted to mention that earlier. {{dercat}} is your friend. Vininn126 (talk) 19:53, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

pehati (strange modification made by user Rua)

edit

See my message in Talk:pehati. I have tried to explain to Rua that the ə is not a valid letter in Slovenian language... Wisdood (talk) 09:18, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@wisdood I have left another comment on the beer parlour section you posted where I get a bit more into detail about the notation used here. Personally, I am not a fan either but I used it since others used it. Garygo golob (talk) 12:17, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
