Etymology

edit

Probably from a western Proto-Indo-European *gandʰ-, *gan- (a vessel, vat, tub), and related to *kanô (vessel, boat), as well as Middle Irish gand (vessel, can).[1] An alternative etymology derives *kannǭ as possibly from Latin canna (a reed, cane).
