Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/kannǭ
Proto-Germanic
editEtymology
editProbably from a western Proto-Indo-European *gandʰ-, *gan- (“a vessel, vat, tub”), and related to *kanô (“vessel, boat”), as well as Middle Irish gand (“vessel, can”).[1] An alternative etymology derives *kannǭ as possibly from Latin canna (“a reed, cane”).
