editOne theory suggests a derivation from Russian угри (ugri, “eels”). An alternative theory, based on historical forms of the name (Wogene, Woga) posits a relationship to Finno-Ugric, e.g. Estonian voog (“flow, stream, wave”), from Proto-Finnic *voo, from Proto-Uralic *uwa- (“to flow”), possibly via Livonian [Term?].
