Compound of kibbelen (squable, fight) and veen (peat bog, marsh). The toponym refers to a marsh which was the subject of a boundary dispute. Compare Cabauw, Hebrecht, Kijfhoek, Kijfwaard, Kibbelgaarn, Krakeel, Krakeelpolder, Schellach and Strijkviertel.
