editFrom Alemannī (“the confederation of German tribes related to Suebi who lived near the upper reaches of Danube”), from Proto-Germanic *alamann-, corresponding to *allaz + *mann-. As an agnomen, Ausonius records the variant Alemannicus was given to the emperor Flavius Gratianus as a result of his victory over that tribe.
