Etymology

edit

Variant of (OC dreʔ) (Guangyun; Schuessler, 2009). If true, see there for etymology.

Janhunen (2011) instead suggests that and possibly had denoted different animals, yet were confused so they would be used seemingly interchangeably to refer to the same range of vague folkloric and mythological beasts.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “If not just a variant of (OC dreʔ), then might (OC dreʔ) be related to Tibetan དྲེད (dred, bear)? Old Chinese * occasionally corresponds to Old Tibetan -d in these cognate sets: (OC *ŋaːlʔ) vs. Tibetan ངེད (nged, I; we), (OC *mralʔ) vs. Tibetan མྱེད (myed, not exist), etc.”
