Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀮𑀤𑀺 (caladi), from Sanskrit चलति (calati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷél-e-ti, from *kʷel- (to move; to turn (around)). Cognate with Bengali চলা (cola), Gujarati ચળવું (caḷvũ), Marathi चळणें (ċaḷṇe), Nepali चल्नु (calnu), Punjabi ਚਲਣਾ (calṇā).
