editFrom Middle Persian bwt' (/but/, “Buddha, idol”), ultimately from Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha). In the earliest New Persian sources of the ninth century, the word already has the extended meaning of “beautiful person; the beloved” (whom one worships instead of God).
