From Proto-Semitic *layʾ-at- ~ laʾay-at- (“cow”), possibly from verbal root *l-ʾ-y "to be strong, mighty". Cognate with Akkadian 𒀖 (lītum, “cow”) and Arabic لَآة (laʔāh, “wild cow”).
