Probably a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yip (thread). Cognate with Crimean Tatar ipek / yipek, Kumyk йибек (yibek), Azerbaijani ipək, Turkish ipek, Turkmen ýüpek, Uzbek ipak, Kazakh жібек (jıbek), Kyrgyz жибек (jibek), Khakas чібек (çìbek), etc.
