Etymology

edit

Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠬᠢᠵᠠᠭᠠᠷ (kiǰaɣar), from Middle Mongol ᠬ᠋ᠢᠵᠠᠭ᠋ᠠᠷ (kiǰaɣar), from Proto-Mongolic *kïjaxar, likely from Proto-Turkic *kïdïg or otherwise related in some manner.

Spurious -г- (-g-) is due to a spelling pronunciation of Classical Mongolian.

Cognate with Buryat хизаар (xizaar), Khamnigan Mongol кидзаар (kidzaar), Kalmyk кизәр (kizär), Dongxiang ghizha, ghizhira. Compare also Turkish kıyı (coast shore).
