editBorrowed from Tatar кәкәй (käkäy, “meat”) ultimately from Middle Mongol ᠭᠠᠬᠠᠢ (ɣaqai, “pig”).[1][2] According to Yegorov, it originally meant pork then later expanded into meat in general.
