Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *ʔɨβotɨr, from Proto-Tupian *kˀɨp potˀɨt.[1] By surface analysis, 'yba (plant) +‎ potyra (flower).[2]

Cognate with Guaraní yvoty.
