The Military history WikiProject's March Madness 2017 has now concluded.

About the drive

edit

March Madness is a backlog reduction drive, which will run from 00:01 UTC on 1 March through to 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017. The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project; however, only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible.

The backlog reduction drive is a four-week effort focused on the following areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.[Note 1]

Scoring

edit

You will receive points for each article you work on, based on the schedule listed below.

Serial Aspect/Category Points
1 Tagging an article for Milhist[Note 2] 1 point
2 Adding a task force to the Milhist banner 1 point
3 Assessing an article 5 points
4 Updating the external links on an A-class article 5 points
5 Updating the content on an A-class article[Note 3] 10 points
6 Creating a requested article 15 points / 25 points [Note 4]

Points can be claimed for multiple aspects for the same article. For instance, adding a project banner and a task force to the talk page will result in two points being awarded. Additionally, if a project banner and task force are added to an article's talk page, and the article is assessed, 7 points will be awarded. The same applies for all other aspects/categories.

Notes

  1. ^ Some example lists are provided below, but please be aware that these are not exclusive, as the goal is to encourage as much participation as possible so the definition of a "requested" article should be construed broadly.
  2. ^ This refers to adding the Milhist project's banner to the talk page.
  3. ^ Content updates on A-class articles can include adding new information to articles about evolving topics, copy editing, improving the formatting, removing overlinked terms or fixing dab links, or adding/improving referencing.
  4. ^ If a requested article is created in the drive period and achieves a B class or higher assessment (also in the drive period), 10 bonus points will be awarded.

Awards

edit

As a token of our appreciation for your efforts, the coordinators will be presenting service awards and barnstars based on the number of articles you improve. The awards will not be cumulative, rather each participant will qualify for a single award based on the total number of points you accumulate.

To add a bit of friendly competition, the three editors who earn the most points by 31 March 2017 will be awarded bronze, silver and gold wikis.

The coordinators will post awards to your talk page within a few days of the end of the drive. If you'd like yours earlier, please ask one of the coordinators.
