Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Mexican-Americans and Chicanos. This page and its subpages contain their collaborative efforts and projects; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page. See the To Do List for current tasks that need attention. ¡Gracias!

Scope

edit

This project encompasses all aspects of the experience of Mexican-Americans in the United States, such as culture, history, politics, and the arts. It covers the experience of the Hispano people, the descendents of the original Spanish and Novo-Spanish settlers of the Southwest, as well. Biographies of all people identified as either Mexican-American or Hispanic should always be included.

Goals

edit
  1. Create a body of articles that accurately depicts the history and culture of Mexican Americans and Chicanos in the United States.
  2. Correct misinformation and bias found in Mexican-American and Chicano related articles. Many existing articles need expansion or complete rewrites, with many more sources, especially academic sources. Simply using good sources would counteract a great deal of the problems with these articles.
  3. Standardize articles on Mexican-American and Chicano subjects. They should have similar layout, formatting, etc.
  4. Include all relevant information, making especially certain to include the often underrepresented voices of women, the poor, indigenous peoples, and all the rest of the chusma (provide the information is properly sourced: Wikipedia cannot use information that is not recorded and readily accessible to scholars, no matter how vital it may be).
  5. Standardize the use of Spanish-language terms, names, and translations into English across the series.
  6. Promote Chicano, the Chicano Movement, and Mexican-American to featured article status.
  7. Add your goal ideas here, or discuss them on the Talk page.

Conventions, Assessments and Statistics

Conventions

edit
  • For the purposes of the project, a Mexican-American is defined as a person born in the United States having Mexican heritage, or any Mexican person who is active predominantly in the United States. A Chicano/a is anyone who identifies him/herself that way.
  • In biographies, identify the subject as either a Mexican American or a Chicano, depending on how that person identifies him/herself (since it is such an identity question)
  • Accentuation: In biographies, use accents if the subject him/herself used them in when spelling their name. (Eg. I think Cesar Chávez spelled his first name w/o an accent, because he was American and it was pronounced the same as "Caesar", while accentuating his Spanish surname-I'm not sure so I'd have to check up on this--but at any rate it helps us avoid relying on Library of Congress subject headings and allows for a measure of individuality.)
  • Spanish words/orgs with Spanish names: Should be italicized and followed by an English translation and approximation the first time they appear in an article. (?-open to suggestions on these and frankly all of these)

Adopt an article

edit

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

  • To list an adopted article here, add *[[Article name]]: [[User:User name]] (dd/mm/yy) below this line
