Since 1980, York City F.C., a professional association football club based in York, North Yorkshire, England, has seen many promotions and relegations. The team won its only English Football League title after finishing first in the Fourth Division in 1983–84 with 101 points, the most season points scored by any team at the time. After four seasons in the Third Division, they were relegated in 1987–88. They beat Crewe Alexandra at Wembley Stadium in the play-off final in 1992–93, winning promotion to the renamed Second Division. Later in the 1990s, they knocked Premier League teams Manchester United and Everton out of the League Cup in successive seasons. At the end of 2003–04, they lost their Football League status. The 2011–12 FA Trophy (celebration pictured) was the first national knockout competition won by York, and they returned to the Football League that season. (Full article...)

Louis Riel

534 – The Codex Repetitae Praelectionis, the second edition of the Codex Justinianus, the codification of Roman law by Justinian I, was published.
1776 – American Revolutionary War: British and Hessian units captured Fort Washington from the Patriots.
1885 – After a five-day trial following the North-West Rebellion, Louis Riel (pictured), Canadian rebel leader of the Métis and "Father of Manitoba", was hanged for high treason.
1938 – Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann first synthesized the psychedelic drug LSD at the Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland.
1973 – U.S. President Richard Nixon signed an act authorizing the construction of the Alaska Pipeline to transport oil from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Alaska.

Syd Barrett

English musician Syd Barrett recorded 37 songs during his two-year solo career. One of the founding members of English rock band Pink Floyd, he was the dominant force in their early years, writing the majority of the material on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. As a result of Barrett's increasing mental illness, guitarist David Gilmour was hired as his possible replacement. When his condition worsened, he was officially excluded from Pink Floyd in April 1968. After his departure, Barrett recorded two solo albums, both released in 1970. Barrett returned to the studio in 1969 to begin work on his first solo album, The Madcap Laughs. His only single, "Octopus", was released in November 1969. Released in January 1970, the album received positive reviews from critics and enjoyed moderate commercial success, reaching number 40 in the UK charts. Two months later, Barrett began recording his second and final solo album, Barrett. Barrett was released in November 1970, but failed to chart; no singles were issued from the album. Senja is an island in the county of Troms in Norway. It has an area of 1,586 square kilometres (612 sq mi) and a population of 7,864 as of 2017. Most of the residents live along the eastern coast of the island, with Silsand being the largest urban area. Senja sits northeast of the Vesterålen archipelago, surrounded by the Norwegian Sea to the northwest, the Malangen fjord to the northeast, the Gisundet strait to the east, the Solbergfjorden to the southeast, the Vågsfjorden to the south, and the Andfjorden to the west. Ånderdalen National Park is located in the southern part of the island.

This picture shows a panoramic view from a ridge located between the Segla and Hesten mountain summits on Senja. The fjord to the left is Øyfjorden and the fjord to the right is Mefjorden.
