Don't want to embarrass you but this "World Chess Federation" (WCF) is an absolute joke. I'd never even heard of them before today, nor have I heard of their "world champion" Stan Vaughan. The world chess governing body is called FIDE. MaxBrowne (talk) 13:06, 27 October 2013 (UTC) Chess players never talk about the "WCF". The guy's a total kook. http://www.chessbase.com/Home/TabId/211/PostId/4009383/the-april-fools-prank-that-was-and-wasnt-040413.aspx MaxBrowne (talk) 13:55, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
- Interesting. I knew it was the FIDE so I wondered about the Wikipedia World Chess Federation link page. Amazing that the guy really weights the money put at stakes. --Askedonty (talk) 14:07, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Your measurement conversion question
editHi,
The change I made was because 14,000 sq yd is not an exact measure, so to convert it to 11,706 (if I recall correctly) sq m was overprecise, hence I knocked down the precision in the {{convert}}
template.
I'm a long-time WP editor (User:SimonTrew) but have lately been editing under IP as I am using a shared computer. Best wishes 82.22.227.170 (talk) 21:22, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
UPS Hartford hub
editDid you not see this????? http://www.pressroom.ups.com/Fact+Sheets/UPS+Air+Operations+Facts (HARTFORD IS NOT LISTED AS A HUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) The source you provded only listed the airports that UPS serves, the source I provided lists the hubs the airline has, and Hartford is not listed as a hub (the airline still serves Hartford but it isn't a cargo hub). 68.119.73.36 (talk) 02:47, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
Fault Current Limiters
editHello and Good Morning! I took your good advice and referred the article on fault Current Limiters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fault_current_limiter to WikiProject Physics for advice on whether there should be a new article FCL, which reference both this article, which should be re-titled Superconducting FCL, and a new article on the mainstream technology (rectifier or solid state FCLs);
or
can I suggest recommend and begin a re-write of the current article in a more balance manner. I am happy with whatever advice WikiProject Physics gives. Thanks for your help! 1capybara (talk) 09:30, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, and, you're welcome! I do not think that I can be considered as a senior editor - my editcount! - but I took some pleasure and interest in reviewing that subject. I am not at all a specialist on the subject, I only collected what documents are available without searching in depth, e.g. I did not enquire about the companies. I expect that the article will go the way of a rewriting the way you are suggesting it. --Askedonty (talk) 16:43, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Books & Bytes New Years Double Issue
editHappy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!
The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:
- Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
- Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
- New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
- Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
- Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
- Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting
two questions please :)
edit1. my AFC [[1]] (on my talk page, article for creation on "Critical Power") was rejected for reasons I disagree with, that it "reads like an advertisement" even though it mentions 5-10 different providers of this product including the free, open-source Linux product. How can this read like an advertisement? Who do I appeal this to, and is this worth appealing, or am I thinking wrong?
2. how do I edit the article on [[2]] "Fault Current Limiter" offline, a little each day, and saving it as I go, without publishing it until it is ready and "finished." I'm thinking the only way is to copy the current page in Word, edit and save it there, then paste it into the published article when its "finished." Is that the best way to do it a little each day?
3. Thanks for your advice :) 1capybara (talk) 11:21, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Elastic recoil detection, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Kinetics and Spectrometry (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

editAfter the initial "I think he meant" the rest was a hash of code, like an old-style gif coming across as characters. μηδείς (talk) 21:28, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
- I'm sorry μηδείς, I should of course have given you the hint. It's the copy-paste of an html page ( an archived google search about hapax apophthegm, subject which was puzzling for me and remains so). You could paste it into a text file which you give a .html extension and open the file into a web browser using the File->Open menu. You may prefer not to as too much gibberish for you. As the send mail page is not tailored for including attachments I could not send a screenshot instead, or it would have been that old-style gif, with the same copy-paste save-file open-browser constraints anyway. --Askedonty (talk) 11:20, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- This is all my fault. a hapax legomenonis a word that is only attested once. I was joking that the cucumbers of peace was a saying that was only attested once. μηδείς (talk) 17:43, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Your recent post on Mozart
editI read and reread your post several times and just don't understand it. Are you using an auto translator? If so, it might be useful to mention on your userpage that you're not fluent in English. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:25, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
- No, I think it's something else. I tend to get the same kinds of results in native mode. Thank you kindly. --Askedonty (talk) 12:42, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
- I don't understand that reply either :-( . --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 09:02, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oh well. It's written expression in general I sometimes have to recognize I have notable shortcomings in. Add a bad education, bar a lot of satisfying experience with etiquette. But it's true, I once developped an auto-translator. It certainly didn't get that much advanced that I would dare manoeuver it on the Rd at any rate. --Askedonty (talk) 20:58, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Followup on PSYOP
editHey - I don't know if you saw my reply during our discussion about PSYOP, but it looks like the discussion was archived, before I ever heard back from you. (The discussion can still be seen here - Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Humanities/2018 September 12) I'm curious what the "Army paragraph" and "Navy paragraph" are that you referred to. It's unclear to me where these "paragraphs" are from. Are you referring to paragraphs in a military manual? A news article? A Wikipedia article? Let me know! Thanks! --Jpcase (talk) 12:06, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Jpcase! I'm sorry, "paragraph" was the wrong expression. I had done just like yourself had - that is, skim through the article. I found several and more examples of PSYOP units called "Psychological Operations unit name" in some pair of articles linked to the former, I do not know which. Later I looked back again at the article and I was indeed surprised by the contrast between the two sentences ( that's "the first occurence of the term in the sub-section", not paragraph ). One step after only I read the sentences properly - for real, and I found logical there was given "noun" status to the one indirectly referring to the units named using the expression ( as elements is used meaning units ). --Askedonty (talk) 20:00, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Distanciating/distantiating
editHi, Askedonty. I think you may have misinterpreted me. I had never heard of that word, at all. I googled it, and learned that it does exist, and can be spelled in two ways. That's why I thanked you. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 18:50, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- Jack of Oz, Sir you got me confused again. Indeed a Collins on-line dictionary is agreeing with the special spelling. Wiktionary did not. Now I'm uncertain whether I should strike my first correction and add a small and digressive explanation about the occurrence! --Askedonty (talk) 20:07, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- None of that is necessary, in my opinion. Wiktionary is not an infallible oracle. Google gives many instances of both spellings. You've been correct both times. Let sleeping dogs lie, I say. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:20, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- Right. Now leaving the dog to savour his heavy turtles dreams. --Askedonty (talk) 08:06, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Helga Heinke question at RD
editKudoz for your effort to search for the relevant book. I am awed. --Ouro (blah blah) 06:29, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, but you're giving me too much credit. It's only after following the name yourself found that I Google-opened the book titled Generaloberst Friedrich Fromm, in which there is mention of the interview. --Askedonty (talk) 09:25, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
Help
editPlease, can you search if Friedrich Fromm, Günther Korten, Heinz Brandt, Rudolf Schmundt, Walther Buhle, Ernst John von Freyend, Henning von Thadden, Heinz Buchholz, and Leonhard von Moellendorff were devoted nazists (inscripted to the Nazi Party) or even them in contrary to the Nazi regime? In Operation Valkirye (film 2008), who were the captain and the sergeant of Reich centraline during that operation? Are there information about Sergeant Kolbe's life, the guard of Wolf's Liar in July 1944? Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.5.73.139 (talk) 12:51, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
