Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The notice "Language links are at the top of the page" that appears in the Vector 2022 skin main menu has been removed now that users have learned the new location of the Language switcher. [1]
- IP info feature displays data from Spur, an IP addresses database. Previously, the only data source for this feature was MaxMind. Now, IP info is more useful for patrollers. [2]
- The Toolforge Grid Engine services have been shut down after the final migration process from Grid Engine to Kubernetes. [3][4][5]
- Communities can now customize the default reasons for undeleting a page by creating MediaWiki:Undelete-comment-dropdown. [6]
Problems
- RevisionSlider is an interface to interactively browse a page's history. Users in right-to-left languages reported RevisionSlider reacting wrong to mouse clicks. This should be fixed now. [7]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 March. It will be on all wikis from 21 March (calendar). [8][9]
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [10][11]

Rollback request
Hey! I'm Mseingth2133444. I saw your name in the list of admins willing to grant rollback requests and was wondering if you could grant me access because I have over 200 mainspace edits and can clearly demonstrate the difference between vandalism and good faith edits. Thanks in advance, Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 16:16, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
- Looking at your contributions, I think you should get more experience in recent changes patrol and participate more. Currently, you have less than 50 edits that are tagged as Undo, and I don't think I would able to evaluate the request without a consistent track record. Thanks for taking your time to help the project. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 03:45, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, understood. Though how can you see how many "undo" edits you have done? Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 14:19, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mseingth2133444, you can use xtools automated edit counter. You can find it here [12] Nagol0929 (talk) 14:42, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- I see, how many would I need in order to be granted rollback? 100? 200? Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 14:53, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- I used this link so I can click on the diffs. I must have miscounted because you didn't have less than 50. In general I am not looking for a number that you hit, but rather enough track record to evaluate how you identify different types of edits. So far you've only patrolled recent changes for a single week. Per Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback you usually need experience for a month. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 15:07, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for disturbing you, but how do you know I've only been doing RC patrol for a month? Just guessing? Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 15:05, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Revdel request
Can you revdel this revision as it is a clear blp violation. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bradley_Philpot&oldid=1214988792 Nagol0929 (talk) 13:16, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- It's run of the mill vandalism, nothing grossly inappropriate or insulting. Not going to revdel. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 13:53, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
More disruption at Talk:SpaceX_Starship
Hi, if you have the time, could you take a look at Talk:SpaceX Starship? As with last time, a new test flight occurred and a new dispute has emerged. ToBeFree has already taken administrative action against some involved users at AN3, but I would like a third opinion to be offerred if possible. Regards, Yasslaywikia (talk) 16:25, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't see any disruption and I would rather not weigh in this time because I am unfamiliar with the subject. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 10:47, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

List of scholarly publishing stings
Hi, oxDeadbeef. I made an addition to List of scholarly publishing stings that was reverted, and I'm trying to understand why. You noted "self published, not referenced by third parties," but at least one of the citations (a reported story by a BBC journalist) is not self-published in any sense that I'm familiar with. There is also an editorial published by a mainstream media outlet (Undark Magazine); perhaps that is also considered self-published but it seems rather different than a tweet or blog etc. Thanks for any help you can provide, I'm still new to Wikipedia editing. Whatsabar (talk) 17:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry about that confusing edit summary. I meant that they are all primary sources. The BBC radio directly interviews the person who made the publication, the editorial is also written by the person who did it. They are not self-published, but rather primary sources. And if this only has primary sources then it is hard for us to consider including them within the articles. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 04:19, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm, ok. I guess I was conceptualizing the BBC Radio story more as a secondary source; it's an editor doing a story on predatory publishing who uses the author as a source. That kind of reference seems in line with the other cited references in this list, but maybe I'm missing something? There are a number of other sources I found that seem straightforwardly secondary as well though, if I'm still not understanding this. (e.g. https://www.dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk/guest-blog-find-the-right-journal-for-your-research-avoid-predators/, https://medwinpublishers.com/PhIJ/why-i-publish-in-predatory-journals-and-why-you-should-too.pdf). thanks for your help. Whatsabar (talk) 05:31, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- You see, the first is a guest blog, while the second is an article published to a predatory journal. They shouldn't really be used within articles. Let me ask you this. Do you have a COI with Bradley Allif, or are you Bradley Allf? 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 11:20, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

A question of sorts
Hello! I just wanted to ask for a bit of advice about edit filter manager. I'm currently an EFH since about 4 months ago, but I'm not entirely sure if I've got anywhere near enough under my belt to make an EFM request. My main motivation for this would be being able to implement changes to filters on my own, such as this, or perhaps things like this, as well as this. (All links are to the mailing list), as well as things like this. Mostly though, I'd like a bit of advice on what I should have if I was to request (the policy page is just a bit vague on any actual requirements other than consensus) EFM, and/or whether I'd be anywhere near ready. Of course, thank you in advance, I'd appreciate it. EggRoll97 (talk) 22:46, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- I think these link showcase good technical understanding to be considered as EFM. Given your experience helping out with edit filters, I would probably lean towards support. On the other hand, people consider EFM to be a high-trust position, and sometimes are harsher when they evaluate EFM candidates compared to RfA candidates. It all comes down to trust, and that can be hard to gauge. I would probably just encourage you to be BOLD and see it it turns out fine. (And there were indeed times where people felt I was being too fast with requesting certain permissions back then, it didn't really hurt my wikicareer as I took their advice and found out how to contribute in a way that works for me) 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 11:31, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Ethics Workshop Participation Request
Hi! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. SPI request
Hey there, a SPI is open on Srabanta Deb and a user pointed me as a potential sockpuppet and I know I am all clear. But I would like to get this out my head so would you like to review the request and then a checkuser could be performed. This request has been open for many days. Thanks in advance Harvici (talk) 07:34, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- I had wanted to close it without further action before because I don't believe you are a sockpuppet, but looks like Spicy beat me to it. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 16:16, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your effort. I have a question about why an editor's IP address will not be checked upon their request to prove innocence against a sockpuppet allegation, as some other WikiMedia projects do not have such policies. Harvici (talk) 05:05, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Harvici, sorry for the slightly late reply. This is indeed a policy specific to English Wikipedia. See WP:CHECKME. The reason is that even if a CheckUser went a take a look, it is not 100% proof that someone is truly innocent. And there are privacy reasons for why we'd want to avoid unnecessary checks. So we only check people that we believe there is reasonable suspicion about two accounts being the same user. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 13:29, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [18][19]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [20]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [21][22]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [23]

Question about a bot
User:EnterpriseyBot is supposed to update the User:EnterpriseyBot/defcon template but hasn't made an edit for quite some time now. I see you along with @Legoktm are listed as maintainers for this tool, could one of you investigate since Enterprisey seems to have taken a leave of absence? Thanks! Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [24][25]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [26][27]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [28]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [29]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [30]

Future changes
- This is the last warning that by the end of May 2024 the Vector 2022 skin will no longer share site and user scripts/styles with old Vector. For user-scripts that you want to keep using on Vector 2022, copy the contents of Special:MyPage/vector.js to Special:MyPage/vector-2022.js. There are more technical details available. Interface administrators who foresee this leading to lots of technical support questions may wish to send a mass message to your community, as was done on French Wikipedia. [34]

Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks. [35]

RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins
Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
- Proposals 2 and 9b (phase II discussion): Add a reminder of civility norms at RfA and Require links for claims of specific policy violations
- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [55] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [56]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [57] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [58]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [59][60]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [61]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [62]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN linktarget
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [63][64]

Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [65]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [66][67]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [68][69]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

HaleBot
Hello, 0xDeadbeef,
I just noticed that Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories hasn't been generated by HaleBot since May 15th. Looking at the bot's contributions, it looks like things have become irregular in general. Luckily, I have that work-around solution that you and Legoktm provided but it seems like there are problems going on with the bot beyond my Empty Categories page. Liz Read! Talk! 20:22, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Liz. Thanks for letting me know. I am very tired and mentally exhausted due to things IRL, so I don't know when I'll be able to hop on and investigate this issue. When I get better, I'll prioritize this. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 07:45, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear that and that Legoktm has been absent from the project for several months now. There is another discussion going on about HaleBot's health on the Database report Talk page that I thought you should know about. But take care of yourself, that's your top priority here. All the best to you. Liz Read! Talk! 17:54, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. I found a bit more time today so I went ahead and fixed it. Surely I will have more time in the coming months to make it more robust.. By the way, I really enjoyed watching the stick figure GIF on your talk page. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 11:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Thank you very much![70] for fixing HaleBot!:) The database reports are updated now from what I see so far. (There were many that had stalled and I haven't checked them all yet) Not sure what we would do without editors like you; you're extremely valuable around here! There was a little panic starting to set in when both you and Lego were unresponsive. I sincerely hope things are looking better with the real-life issues you've been dealing with. Take care and have a great rest of your day. DB1729talk 10:14, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- You're welcome :) I usually don't handle compliments well, but this comment made me smile. Thanks for taking time to write this message. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 11:22, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
Sockpuppetry
Sir, I have serious complain regarding continuous vandalism on several film article by an editor using multiple accounts. Kindly check here by the user Joressa, here by one Paul is describing and here by one Master of all cinemalovers. Inspite of repeated warning, the user again and again deleted the reliable sources by disruptive editing. Pinakpani (talk) 05:19, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply, these accounts appear to have been blocked already. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 08:24, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
Request
Since you're listed as one of the maintainers of HaleBot, I wanted to ask if it would be possible to implement a minor update. As it stands, Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories is supposed to catch pages which have a mixture of userspace and mainspace content in them, so that they can be cleaned up to remove userpages on WP:USERNOCAT grounds — however, the report always also catches a significant number of hidden internal maintenance categories where it really isn't a problem at all if there are userpages in them, which just linger around from update to update as speedbumps that have to be worked around because there's nothing to actually clean up.
There's a template, {{Polluted category}}, already on many of those categories, which used to (and was intended to) have the effect of causing the polluted category reports to bypass categories that were so tagged and not list them for cleanup that they don't need, but at some point the reports seem to have stopped skipping those. So would it be possible to update HaleBot to start recognizing that template, and skipping the categories that are tagged with it when it updates the polluted categories report, again? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 15:03, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Bearcat: Could you give me an example of a category that has the {{Polluted category}} template but gets listed in the database report, so I can look into it? 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 16:50, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

- Welcome! I hope you like it here. While not familiar with video games articles myself, I can give you some pointers to promoting some you have expanded to GA if you like. Also, consider going for WP:DYKs if you can expand an article fivefold or create new articles. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 03:39, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I need help finding the right administrator on a history page
I'm trying to add multiple estimates on Japans body count during and before world war 2. It seems that there's only one estimate available in the description section and i've tried adding a citation, but the guy who added the 30 million estimate removed my edit. I tried talking to him and adding to the discussion page, but he and the discussion page of been silent. Can you please point me in the right direction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:LilAhok#I'd_like_to_know_better_context_on_the_edit_you_made_against_my_own_on_Japans_war_crimes
