More than 162 million people saw our message asking if you could imagine a world without free knowledge. You said no. You shut down Congress’s switchboards. You melted their servers. From all around the world your messages dominated social media and the news. Millions of people have spoken in defense of a free and open Internet.

For us, this is not about money. It’s about knowledge. As a community of authors, editors, photographers, and programmers, we invite everyone to share and build upon our work.

Our mission is to empower and engage people to document the sum of all human knowledge, and to make it available to all humanity, in perpetuity. We care passionately about the rights of authors, because we are authors.

SOPA and PIPA are not dead: they are waiting in the shadows. What’s happened in the last 24 hours, though, is extraordinary. The internet has enabled creativity, knowledge, and innovation to shine, and as Wikipedia went dark, you've directed your energy to protecting it.

Wikipedia itself often showcases pages like Islam and terrorism as examples of high quality articles, and in truth they are. But those pages have acquired the greatest scrutiny because there are opposing stakeholders ...

The NeutralPointOfView desperately hinges on the very point that no one disagrees with the text, and thus if that bar for disagreement is very low (as in no one cares) then the page will remain low quality.

The red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It occupies a wide range of habitats and altitudes, including deserts, grasslands, forests, agricultural fields, and urban areas. Red-tailed hawks are opportunistic generalists and their diet is variable. In North America, they are most often predators of small mammals such as rodents. Prey that is terrestrial and at least partially diurnal is preferred, so types such as ground squirrels are preferred where they naturally occur. The bird is legally protected in Canada and Mexico, and in the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The most diverse families of flowering plants, in order of number of species, are:

Asteraceae or Compositae (Daisy family): 26,000 species
Orchidaceae (Orchid family): 20,000 (possibly 30,000)
Fabaceae or Leguminosae (Pea family): 17,000
Poaceae or Gramineae (Grass family): 9,000
Rubiaceae (Madder family): 7,000
Euphorbiaceae (Spurge family): 5,000
Malvaceae (Mallow family): 4,300
Cyperaceae (Sedge family): 4,000

In the list above (showing only the 8 largest families), the Orchidaceae, Poaceae, and Cyperaceae are monocot families; the others are dicot families. The total number of families in the flowering plants is over 460. There are around 95,000 species also.

My category link disappeared!

Category links work in a special way; they determine which categories an article shall belong to. The categories are displayed at the very bottom of the page, no matter where the link is inserted on the page.

Sometimes you may want to create a link to a category page without putting the current page in that category. This may arise on discussion pages or draft articles. To create such a link, place a colon (:) at the beginning of the link, like this: [[:Category:Physical exercise]], which shows up like this: Category:Physical exercise.

So if your link does not appear where you expected, it just means that you forgot the leading colon.

The same trick applies to links to Wikipedia in other languages. To create a visible link to the Indonesian Wikipedia article "Teknologi," use the id prefix for Indonesian, with a colon before it to keep it visible: [[:id:Teknologi]], which creates id:Teknologi.
