editThis article illustrates in a small way the damage that reliance on internet sources can do to entries if not carefully checked. The figures posted here of dead and injured come from a web site, repeated by or from other web sites. They report 33 dead. Having been in this tornado personally, and having worked its aftermath as a police officer for three weeks, I know exactly the number of dead, where and how they died, their names, and the figure 33 is spurious. 32 were killed in the storm, and two Air National Guardsmen died in a fire in the furniture store the Guard was using as a rest area for workers days later. The city of Xenia erected a memorial plaque listing all 34 of the dead by name. You can find pictures of the plaque on line and physically count the names. Yet the figure of 33 persists--even in "followup" news media accounts. I grant this is a small thing, but reliability rests on the details. A million articles each having just one error makes a sham of reliability.--Buckboard 08:54, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- By defintion, a public access WIKI won't be accurate unless people like yourself fact check it. The reason it wasn't right is that only you knew that it was, and you corrected it. george 04:05, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
- Accuracy vs "wiki" be damned! Wikipedia demands that original research is not appropriate. Per guidelines, Xenia's memorial plaque would be considered an unreliable source. As would a first person account. I don't agree with it, but according to guidelines every source has to be pre-digested by a journalist.--Koppas (talk) 03:15, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
- Buckboard by your own admission the fault does not lie with "internet sources" as much as it does with the news media itself.
References
edit"the place of the devil wind" sentence needs to be referenced. I see someone tried to put something in the text, but it needs a <ref>. But how in the heck to we reference a freaking historical marker? -Charleca (talk) 10:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank god we have Wikipedia to give Xenia its "Popular Culture" section. Are you serious? Why on earth is it worth mentioning that Xenia is the only town that starts with an X and has a population of over 50,000? That is clutching at straws at best and proves that Wikipedia is a mockery. Who gives a rat's ass about that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.251.44.44 (talk) 04:57, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Bicycle Capital of the Midwest? -- RS?
editA friend was doing a crossword puzzle from 2015 that identified Xenia as the "bicycle capital of the Midwest." I looked here in Wikipedia to see if that was legit., and I see that the source is [1]. I don't consider that WP:RS. So I looked in Google [2]. All I see is promotion references like [3], [4] and several crosswod puzzle clue "trackers." It just looks like some promo that Xenia came up with, and I do not think we should participate unless it is changed to make it very clear that it is promo or that when sources say "it was proclaimed" that we know exactly who other than the Chamber of Commerce of Xenia is doing the proclaiming.
I am, therefore, have deleted it, until a better independent source can be found, which seems unlikely.
