editPerhaps the opinions need to be marked off by something more cautious and indicative. (Hapless Hero 01:33, 9 June 2006 (UTC))
Date of birth discrepancy
editthere seems to be some kind of discrepancy on the date of birth:
- 2 May 1953 → Valery Gergiev at IMDb
- 21 Sep 1953 → Gergiev Valery Gergiev at AllMusic
are there any other validating sources out there? --emerson7 | Talk 18:22, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
It is without a doubt 2 May 1953. 21 September may be his wedding anniversary. Here are some sources:
His Decca Homepage has a biography timeline here: http://www.valerygergiev.com/artists/gergiev/aboutgergiev.html
from the book, "Valery Gergiev and the Kirov: a Story of Survival" by John Ardoin, pg 18
The Moscow Times in this piece from April 2008 references a gala concert for the maestro's birthday to occur during the Easter Festival from Russian Orthodox Easter till May 9 http://context.themoscowtimes.com/print.php?aid=184681
The russian blog oboe.ru references an iclassic article about the Maestro's 50th birthday...the link to the article is defunct, unfortunately but they copied the English.... "iclassics публикует большое интервью с Валерием Гергиевым - смешно, но болтают снова о Прокофьеве и Шостаковиче. Эта парочка просто неразлучима.
"2003 is a year of celebration for Valery Gergiev, who reaches a personal milestone on May 2, his 50th Birthday. The charismatic Russian conductor has been engaged in a series of high-profile appearances in the US in past weeks, which included performances at the Metropolitan Opera and a tour with the Kirov Orchestra.
Reviewing the recent Gergiev/Kirov performance at Washington's Kennedy Center, Tim Page observed in the Washington Post that "Gergiev's leadership was charged with a palpable urgency and heat that made this Mahler Ninth one of the most exciting I've heard..it had...the central, the essential virtue of great music making - it was thoroughly, blazingly alive."
Ballets
editAren't both the Rite of Spring and The Firebird ballets? Thus shouldn't they be listed in his discography under ballet? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.248.204.38 (talk) 17:38, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Spelling of the Name
editI know it's just a transliteration, but I think in English the more common spelling is 'Gergiev'. Perhaps the article could be moved? Leoniceno (talk) 09:46, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
- Every concert rpgoramme etc that I've seen uses Gergiev - indeed other than the opening he's referred to throughout the article as Gergiev! David Underdown (talk) 09:28, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- I moved it. Even his own homepage uses the commonly accepted spelling, so this WP article going against that is WP:OR Antienne (talk) 23:09, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Why are you hiding facts
editI've made some changes according to real information available on network - videos, information agencies etc: conducted a concert near the ruined building of the South Ossetian Parliament as tribute to the victims of the war and said that 2000 innocent people were killed, but this face was never proved and denied by all sides of war
This is confirmed information and this shame shouldn't be hidden from history. Not saying real bad things for person is really bad thing. Especially when we are accusing nations for things they've never done. This is shame of Gergiev, this is fact and this should be on this page do you like it or not. 94.43.121.165 (talk) 22:52, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Pronunciation of surname
editShould his surname by pronounced as GjÉrgijev (with an E sound like in "Edward") or - as I would have expected given Russian spelling and phonetic rules - as GjÓrgijev (with the O as in "order")? I've heard somewhere it should be Gjérgijev, but I'm suspicious... Any information here would be most welcome! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.167.228.32 (talk) 21:44, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
==Good question, as there is even a third possibility: GjérgjOf, as in "Pletnyof" (for Mikhail Pletnev), for example. I hope one of our Russian-speaking editors can elucidate this. MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 12:05, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your reply, MUSIKVEREIN. Due to that Pljetnjóv's name has the 'e'-character both immediately preceded and followed by consonants (other cases are Gorbachjóv and Khrushchjóv, for quick reference), I'm disinclined to think that Gjórgijev / Gjérgijev would be so affected since the 'i'-character comes just before the 'je'-character in both the original Cyrillic version of the name as well as its Latin transliterations. [Here one could have wished to have known how the name would have been written using the Old Russian alphabet (pre-1918, after which 5 characters were dropped and a few other things were simplified), as an accented 'je' had then a special character to clarify matters...] —Preceding unsigned comment added by LJBrutus (talk • contribs) 06:20, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Involvement in Politics: Pro-Putin Stance
editValery is active in Politics, and a lively supporter of Putin: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2014/05/21/pro-putin-conductor-russias-taboos-need-to-be-respected/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.70.80.5 (talk) 13:39, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

editI am not sure what this user is trying to achieve [1]. The subject of this page has certain political views. He does not hide them, he expresses them publicly; he has every right to do so, and this was published everywhere. What's the problem? My very best wishes (talk) 03:17, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Voyage60. Please realize: this is not a negative information about living person. These are his political views he wants to be known by signing letters, giving interviews, etc. These are views he is probably proud of. Please see how that was done on ruwiki [2]. Making something similar here would be fine. My very best wishes (talk) 13:22, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

... he was fired on 1 March 2022
editEnglish isn't my mother tongue, but doesn't the formulation he was fired smack of tabloid journalism? It sounds vulgar and as if someone is taking his hatred of Gergiev out on him. Isn't he was dismissed or he was discharged (from his functions) a more neutral and correct formulation? Glad to read any comments from people knowledgeable in English, and maybe see an improvement of the article. Herbmuell (talk) 10:37, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think it's terribly important, but yes, I agree that "fired" is rather tabloidy word at least in British English. (In US-English I think it may come across as a bit more mainstream.) Then again, several of the sources referenced on the point are a little bit tabloidy. Anyway, I've entered a couple of changes which you - or anyone else interested - are more than welcome to revert or, better still, to improve upon. Be well. Charles01 (talk) 16:49, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you User:Charles01, and you caught a second instance of fired, too. This is much better. As to important or not, well, for me this is just common decency towards the person of the article. Herbmuell (talk) 17:07, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Investigation by Anti-Corruption Foundation of Aleksey Navalny
editThere was a video about him created by Anti-Corruption Foundation of Aleksey Navalny. It is named Conductor of Putin's war, and it has more than 2 million views. Sure, this is something notable, and that was also covered in a number of sources, such as The Insider (see here) or OperaWire [3]. Here is one of earlier publications from Reuters (Navalny demands EU crackdown on oligarchs close to Kremlin). This is not about his political views, but about a reliably sourced accusation of corruption. I do not see it on the page. He is a public figure. So, I think this must be included to the page in some form. So, according to the article in Reuters, for example, Navalny spoke about Putin's oligarchs: “They embezzle money, steal billions and at the weekend they fly to Berlin or London, buy expensive apartments and sit in cafes,” ... He singled out Valery Gergiev, chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, as a target for sanctions..." But that article in Reuters did not provide details. The details are coming in "Insider" and video. My very best wishes (talk) 22:31, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
- Given no response here so far, I am going to include this info. My very best wishes (talk) 02:27, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
- I've reverted you once again. Why are you attempting to turn this into an attack page? Do you want to damage Gergiev's career? (I think I will have to call admins on you.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 16:20, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- I am sorry, but this is not a policy-based argument. This is simply an important sourced info to be included per BLP:Public figures. I think he even did not deny it. Did he? I did not see anything published with his denial. Perhaps I only used a sub-optimal link. It should be that one [4], and I can include a couple of additional references (above). My very best wishes (talk) 18:11, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- I've already provided a rules-based argument. The link has nothing to do in the "External links" section. --Moscow Connection (talk) 18:41, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Which means you do not object to including this info to the page (as outlined above), but only object to including the link? My very best wishes (talk) 18:46, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you can make of this, would a sentence or two be enough for you? Right now, half of the article is really unnecessary political stuff. I think the "Political involvement" section should be trimmed. Could you trim it, please? Gergiev is not a politician, he is a musician, so the Wiki article should be about music. --Moscow Connection (talk) 21:45, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- If I tried to improve this page, I would probably follow page about him on ruwiki, (ru:Гергиев, Валерий Абисалович). The info related related to investigation by Navalny takes a separate section on ruwiki. A musician, rather than a political/public figure? I am not sure. More than 50% of his page on ruwiki is not about music. My very best wishes (talk) 01:27, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Unsourced section
editThe "Awards" section has only one ref about one award. The unsourced content should be removed per WP:BLP. My very best wishes (talk) 23:05, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Last sentence of Political section
editIt's not a sentence at all, is it? What if someone actually reads it? It needs to be corrected by someone who respects the Anglo-Saxon language. Our seriousness in condemning this insidious artist needs to be unimpeachable. 2A01:E0A:38E:D5F0:1B8:BA80:325F:108E (talk) 08:01, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
