Town square → Public square – A town square is a particular type of square. The scope of the current article appears to cover squares in general; hence, the current article title may not be appropriate. - Support. Seems logical for the article title to use the broader term. All town squares are public squares, but not all public squares are town squares. Rreagan007 (talk) 06:54, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Town square" is WP:COMMONNAME. The term "town square" implies it is a public space, i.e. owned/used by the town, not an individual (so not a private courtyard). And implies it is in an urban area (so not a village green). And implies it is typically central to life of the town or the surrounding neighborhood (not just any empty space owned by the municipality). The term is very commonly used and has very vivid associations. This article seems to be trying to capture this traditional meaning. I don't think there is danger of confusion. "Public square" is less common and more ambiguous, e.g. could refer to any empty unutilized wind-swept courtyard by some collection of bureaucratic buildings, off in some remote suburban area. - Support--seems a more logical scope Red Slash 20:52, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. I'm not sure this is the primary meaning of "public square". I believe the primary meaning today is figurative (e.g., 'religion in the public square', 'Twitter is the public square'). Moreover, if this is where piazza and plaza redirect, the current title is better. And those two words are more common in English (see ngrams) than either the current or proposed title. - The online Webster's dictionary's first definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/public%20square is "an open public area in a city or town where people gather"...
- Im sure the literal meaning of the term would be easily understood for an encyclopedia.
- What about "Urban square" (which is used on Commons) or "Square (
publicurban space)"? Not all the squares in this article are town squares (e.g., Azadi Square)
- What about "Urban square" (which is used on Commons) or "Square (

- Support alternate move to Square (architecture) or Square (landscape architecture). This is one situation where WP:NATURAL simply cannot encompass its possible permutations, including town, city, public, et cetera. The disagreement here stems from the fact that the various proposed titles exclude some aspects of the other ones to a certain degree. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 12:40, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- Both of these would be okay... WikiEditor50 (talk) 12:37, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
