Actually, Machaeroprosopus Mehl et. al., 1916 (type species: M. validus Mehl et. al., 1916) represents a pseudopalatine phytosaur, based on the description by Mehl et. al. (1916). However, the type specimen of Machaeroprosopus is lost (Ballew, 1989). Also, Metarhinus Jaekel, 1910 (preoccupied Osborn, 1908) was a new name for Belodon buceros Cope, 1881. Thus Machaeroprosopus and Metarhinus should be removed from synonymy with Rutiodon.
