Prime Ministers of Jammu & Kashmir

edit

It is common knowledge that the Indian princely state of Jammu & Kashmir was established by Maharaja Gulab Singh (a feudatory to the Sikh Empire) in consequence of the treaty of Amritsar, by which he got control of the Sikh state of Kashmir and merged it with his existing state (Jammu & Ladakh) -- thus forming the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir under the overall authority of British India. British India exercised control of defence, external relations and communications, and the internal administration of the state was autonomous (under the administration of the Maharaja). The state also had a british resident appointed by the Viceroy of India, as was the case in most princely states.

The partition of India led to two dominions, the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. The United Nations observed that the Union of India would inherit the membership of the United Nations formerly held by British India, since the Union of India was internationally recognised as the only successor state to British India. Pakistan had to therefore apply for a fresh membership of the UN, while India continued its founding membership. The princely state of J&K (under the earlier colonial India) continued to remain an Indian princely state after partition (and accession) to independent India.

Most princely states of India acceded to the Union of India, while certain other princely states acceded to the dominion of Pakistan. They remained princely states (in both countries) until their princely status was abolished. In India they continued to have their princely rulers, and the state prime ministers (more commonly called Dewans but translated as prime ministers in English) until the abolition of princely status, when the prime ministers were designated as chief ministers to avoid confusion with the Prime Minister of India. A discussion on the continuation of this title (of Prime Minister of princely states) was carried out in the Indian constituent assembly in 1949, with the pariticipation of some former prime ministers of J&K such as Gopalaswami Ayyangar.

In the case of Jammu & Kashmir, the re-designation of the state Prime minister as chief minister happened in 1964-65. Until 1965, the Maharaja and his son (as a regent or sadr-e-riyasat) were nominally the rulers of their state. Therefore they still nominally continued to appoint their prime ministers.

Since this article is an article on the Chief Ministers of the state, and covers the period when the state was a princely state as well, there is no valid reason to exclude earlier prime ministers and start arbitrarily with Mehr Chand Mahajan. @Kautilya3: please provide reasons why you are reverting my contributions. My edit summary said "it wasn't a princely state for all of the time mentioned in the tables". Isn't that clear enough?
The Maharaja and his son were nominal rulers of the state until 1954, when the monarchy was abolished. See Article 370#Presidential order of 1954.
Ever since the Constitution of India came into effect, it was a State of India. So, there is no need to go gung-ho about 'princely state' stuff. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 20:17, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Your edit summary ("it wasn't a princely state for all of the time mentioned in the tables") is factually incorrect, although it was clear enough. It remained a princely state (and the Maharaja was still the head of the state) after the ruler signed the instrument of accession, from the year of its creation (1846) until its princely status was abolished by the state assembly and later recognized in the constitution. The constitution itself until the states reorganization act, recognized different kinds of states such as part A states (regular states) and Part B states (princely states). Why do you not stop your revert warring (reverting my valid content over and over again) and start getting some basic knowledge about the state's history? Issue with the term lieutenant governor's rule

edit

Please remove the term lieutenant governor's rule because it is no where described by the government of India so please remove it. Arjunuws (talk) 15:57, 25 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yes i too have the same opinion. And i am in the process of reviewing the whole article as there are a lot of discrepancies in the terminology used. You can also contribute in the process by proving citations and suggestions. AnM2002 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:32, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Mehr Chand Mahajan

edit

I don't why people need to add Mehr Chand Mahajan, but if you must, please note that he was part of "Maharaja's administration"; not any interim government. He also didn't belong to any party such as the "Indian National Congress". -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:53, 15 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

I totally acknowledge and concur with your observation.AnM2002 (talk) 09:35, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ambiguity in using ' Appointer ' for LG

edit

The statement saying chief Minister is appointed by the Lieutenant governor. But UT is under the process of ' delimitation' as the GoI constituted ' delimitation commission ' therefore i suggest that this statement be replaced by 'Governor(prior to reorganization)' as fresh elections will be held only when the delimitation process is completed. I suggest waiting until it's notified as to what will be the structure/nature/powers/role of the legislature in the state. It's not correct to make assumptions when there is uncertainty as to what will be the future course. Though the reorganization act mentions setting up of a legislature in the UT, the timeline regarding it remains ' uncertain.' AnM2002 (talk) 12:43, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Table of statistics

@JaiHind108, Then please justify why we need to add this second table when first is already there. No other article show this kind of table. Please look at WP:Featured List and Wikipedia:Featured list criteria Venkat TL (talk) 18:30, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@JaiHind108, I am sorry, but I did not write this rule. Please check the rules of WP:BRD, I had to revert following it. Wikipedia:Featured list criteria explains the criteria. --Venkat TL (talk) 18:36, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
