Animated Gif
editI suggest getting rid of that ridiculous animated gif of the lights. I don't think Wikipedia should make its format comparable to a geocities page circa 1997. — [Unsigned comment added by Chipotlehero (talk • contribs).]
- It's not that gaudy, it looks like a real christmas tree, which is the point. Besides, it'll be gone in a few days, just relax and have fun with it. Joe I 21:43, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Suggestions
editSorry to say that at this point I really don't have any. I can tell you however that I am trying to do a little to make it easier for people to find and improve articles relating to holidays. I can add a notice on the new Holidays project banner relating to this portal, and will do so. However, I personally think that the priority now might be to working to find out how to find all the content related to the portal. Beyond that, you might leave a message at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals. Best of luck in any event, and my profound thanks and applause for having had the initiative to create the portal! Calendar
editI would create a Calendar WikiProject or Portal. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.87.96.65 (talk) 09:21, 13 May 2007 (UTC).
Colours
editI know they're the Christmas colours, but the text is really hard to see, and I'm not colour-blind! Is it possible to see the text is you're colour-blind? I'm not sure what colours to propose, but something better than these could be found surely? JWPJ (talk) 06:59, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
- I didn't even think about color blindness. Hmmm, really, what other colors for christmas would you suggest? I could go with some other shades of green and red, but wouldn't be able to check the color blindness thing. I'll look around. Joe I 06:09, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Red-on-white or green-on-white would work fine - just not red and green together! -- Chuq (talk) 12:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's almost to late, but that should work fine, ya think? Thanks. Joe I 04:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

The definition of "holiday" is not correct
editThe lead for this portal gives a definition which includes the words "In the English-speaking world....", as if there is universal agreement on the meaning among all English speakers. Sadly that's not true. Having discovered this error in the Valentines day article, I recently edited both it and the Holiday article to point out that, at least in Australia, the word holiday is used only to refer to days which involve time away from work or school for most people. Days such as Valentines Day, Ash Wednesday, Yom Kippur, Halloween, etc, which do not involve time away from work or school, are NOT described as holidays in Australia.
Unlike the editor(s) who made the original incorrect claim for the whole English speaking world, I don't pretend to know enough about other cultures to be sure about the situation in other places. There could be other places similar to Australia, and there could be other differences. Can I ask two things, firstly that we improve the definition, and secondly, that editors be a little more humble in their belief that they know what happens in places they really know nothing about.

Seasons Greetings
editMerry Christmas from me! Thanks for your company during 2016. We have seen the percentage of articles on women rise from 15.5% to 16.77%. 20% is within our grasp and that's an increase of 11% over what we first found. Holidays by calendar date/month or hemisphere-specific season
editIs there any way on Wikipedia to quickly find out, for instance, what the upcoming holidays are around the world for February 2012, whether secular, religious, national or not? Currently I am pretty sure this information is not available, or perhaps only available by some obscure search approach such as category intersection. So if not, does anyone think it is worthwhile trying to create a Wikipedia article or list that could achieve this useful correlation of holiday information? I can see that it would be a huge undertaking, but on the flipside, would really have value. Donama (talk) 01:59, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
In the English speaking world? Really?
editCan we not start off with "In the English speaking world?" I thought wikipedia aspired to be a global portal, but over and over again I see that it leans heavily on American perspectives. Or are celebrations just an American thing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.78.204.68 (talk) 16:43, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yep. Classic example of our systemic bias. HiLo48 (talk) 21:27, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
Notice from the Portals WikiProject
editWikiProject Portals is back!
The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.
As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.
There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.
And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 07:32, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
