History
editExcavations indicate human habitation of Lespignan dating to 4000 years ago.[4] During the 13th century, Lespignan was granted to Lambert de Thury, a companion of Simon de Montfort, as a part of the Albigensian Crusade.[4] In 1379 King Charles V used his right of preemption to officially establish Lespignan as a community.[4] In 1500, the village acquired its own lord through a treaty of joint sovereignty with King Charles V.[4] The absence of a male heir led to successive changes in leadership.[4]
