Licensing

MooseFS is available in two editions with distinct licensing models: Community Edition (CE) and Professional Edition (PRO).

MooseFS Community Edition (CE)​

MooseFS CE is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). This is a widely used free software license that guarantees end users the freedom to run, study, share, and modify the software. Under the terms of GPLv2, users are allowed to:

  • Use the software freely for both personal and commercial purposes,
  • Access and modify the source code to adapt it to their needs,
  • Distribute the software or modified versions, as long as they remain under the same license.

MooseFS PRO​

MooseFS PRO uses a proprietary licensing model. The license is:

  • Lifetime (perpetual),
  • Non-transferable,
  • Limited by the total size of mounted cluster disks.

The PRO license does not impose any restrictions on:

  • The number of Master Servers,
  • The memory size of Master Servers,
  • The number of stored objects (files and directories),
  • The number of Chunkservers,
  • The number of connected Clients (mounts),
  • Bandwidth or total volume of transferred data.

This model provides a balance between open-source flexibility and enterprise-level scalability, allowing organizations to choose the edition that best fits their needs.
