Inspiration
The inspiration for the project was mindless spending online for impulse purchases. We wanted to design an app that helps you to be mindful of your budget and reminds you to stay on track of your financial goals.
What it does
You input your monthly budget and expenses on the landing page and it will generate a pie chart of your monthly spending and how it relates to your budget. If you go online to purchase something like on ebay.ca or amazon.ca and have the app extension enabled, it will generate a pop up message on the checkout page with information on how this purchase will impact your monthly budget, it will also generate a graph to help you visualize your purchase. There will be an option minimize and exit the pop up if youd like to continue with your purchase
How we built it
Created a chrome extension using JavaScript, HTML and CSS, made a landing page to input your income and expenditure data, which will be saved on local storage within the browser, this data is later used to decide on the purchase risk
Challenges we ran into
Trying to load external JavaScript libraries was impossible, so we created and downloaded these libraries locally to render stuff like the chart, using chart.js.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a parsing algorithm that works on most ecommerce websites.
What we learned
We learned that chrome extension have heavier security restrictions that regular web applications.
What's next for Spendless
further testing and deployment, and more scalability.
