Project Story
Inspiration
We decided to create this to make first aid more accessible for everyday people who may not have the background knowledge in properly treating injuries in emergency situations under stress. The built-in scanner quickly identifies the type of visible wound on casualties, and provides immediate instructions on how to treat injuries with the materials on hand in the first aid kit. The scanner is able to recognize injuries, and provide voice instructions on how to treat injuries.
What it does
Our project utilizes CAD and Arduino to create a more beginner friendly first aid kit, with both first aid materials, electronic parts and a speaker included. By activating the electronic component, the scanner feature will turn on, allowing the user to scan the casualty’s injury. Then, once the scanner has identified and recognized a specific injury previously uploaded into its database, the audio component will first ask the user to verify a description of the wound, and then vocalize a predicted diagnosis of the injury type. Then, it will begin instructing procedures to take to treat the injury with readily available materials in the first aid kit.
How we built it
We first brainstormed ideas, and ideated the first aid kit voice-instructed product. Then, we trained a machine learning model to scan and recognize specific types of visual injuries, such as heat burns, which require different treatment depending on the severity of the burn. Meanwhile, we 3-D printed a first aid kit box, and added a Raspberry Pi to make our audio component.
Challenges we ran into
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of having trained a machine learning model, as well as built hardware for the first aid kit. Being able to innovate in a field where immediate action is key to survival, we are proud of having created something that can improve lives.
What separates our solution is the first aid kit’s accessibility to the public - given the ability to identify and instruct treatment, both first aiders and non-first aiders can use and better treat emergencies. Furthermore, the first aid kit is customized to its location - a kit meant for the zoo will contain more animal-related wound medical supplies, whereas a national park may contain more heat-related treatment supplies. The Aid-First technology will be updated on each first aid kit’s supplies, and instruct first aiders with the supplies available in each kit.
What we learned
What's next for AidFirst
What’s next for us is to create a visual component for our product, where we can output images on how to treat injuries properly, alongside text that provides clear, concise information on how to treat injuries as well. We may also add a search bar for easier use. Furthermore, we will ensure that our product meets safety protocols in all danger situations, and does not pose a hazard in any way, such as if flooding were to happen, and the equipment got wet.
