Note: This world makes extensive use of Custom UI. Due to known responsiveness regressions introduced in Horizon v221, some UI may feel slower to load or respond. Optimizations have been made (and will continue to be made) to minimize impact wherever possible

Changes made to the original version of Adopt A Blob include: A heavily updated "Blob Command Center" UI, a tutorial built into the Blob Command Center, an updated Trait system (Multiple traits can be unlocked, and traits can be modified), a Trait UI that displays the strengths of each trait, an Adventure system with randomized loot based on multiple factors, Adoption Tickets, Shiny Blob's, a Discovered UI that displays all of a players discovered Blob's, personal Blob spawn bases, a re-designed game map, sounds, quests, 6 different leaderboards, and much more..

Inspiration

I set out to make a charming creature collecting game where players could form bonds with their own colorful, collectible Blobs

What it does

You adopt and raise your own Blobs. Feed them, send them on adventures, and level them up. As they level up, they'll unlock new traits and become bigger in-world. Each trait has different buffs. Discover a hundred different Blobs (and their shiny variants) of different rarities. It’s all about collecting and building a bond with your Blobs

How I built it

UI became my main tool for bringing the world of Blobs to life. Collecting, feeding, adventuring, modifying traits and more - It all flows through Custom UI. But there’s a full game running underneath it too - And expanded in-world interaction to come!

Challenges I ran into

Most of my challenges came from the UI, as that is what most of my development time went towards. Trying new things, managing a ton of bindings, and making sure it all looks good

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

This is only my second solo project on Horizon - So I’m proud of how far it’s come. Especially the UI, which has evolved drastically in both functionality and design

What I've learned

I've become more familiar with Custom UI and all of the cool things you can do with it in Horizon

What's next for Adopt A Blob

Phase 1

  • Expanding on the unique-ness of each Blob. Personality, facial expressions and designs, accessories etc.
  • In-world interaction with your Blob's. Not just feeding them or sending them on adventures through a UI, but actually picking them up (which is possible) and doing these actions inside the game world (which isn't currently possible). This means we'll need a bigger castle to explore!
  • More items (loot!) that can be acquired through adventures

Phase 2

  • UI improvements and additions across the board. Multi-select, multi-action, etc.
  • Minigame expansion. Rotating fun, simple things to do while your Blobs are off on adventures
  • Base customization. Allowing players to customize their base with it's own primary/secondary color, and decorations
