- El Protectorado de San Martín, también llamado Protectorado del Perú y régimen de los departamentos libres, fue un protectorado y gobierno provisional que ejerció el militar rioplatense José de San Martín sobre el territorio independizado del Virreinato del Perú por la Expedición Libertadora del Perú tras la proclamación de la independencia hecha en la Plaza Mayor de Lima. José de San Martín asumió oficialmente el mando político y militar de los departamentos libres y el título de Protector de la Libertad del Perú por decreto el 3 de agosto de 1821. Tras el estancamiento de la guerra y la entrevista de Guayaquil, renunció al cargo el viernes 20 de septiembre de 1822, fecha de la instalación del Congreso Constituyente del Perú que convocó el 27 de diciembre de 1821 y al cual depositó los poderes ejecutivos en la Suprema Junta Gubernativa. Cuando José de San Martín envistió el título de Protector, el Perú estaba dividido militar y administrativamente en dos territorios: el norte y Lima, los cuales se encontraban en manos de los independentistas; y el centro, sur y Cuzco, los cuales se encontraban en manos de los realistas.
