We would need to store the category tree as the option values for this to work. Of course, if you're using permalinks, it'll redirect.

It doesn't "link to" anything -- it's a JavaScript window.location redirect. You get what you pay for.

As Nacin said, the dropdown doesn't "link" to anything (this means there's no detrimental SEO effect or anything like that). The resulting URL gets redirected anyway if you've pretty permalinks enabled. Plus no traction in four years.
