First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Rzuwig!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello Rzuwig.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

Category discussion warning

Most Przemysła I w Poznaniu has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Rzuwig,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

[edit]

Please refrain from tagging redirects of moved images for speedy deletion - there's no need to do so. Especially if an image was available under the old name for several years. 2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Renaming to oga?

[edit]

Hey! Are you sure that "oga" is a valid file extension? The renaming requests seem to be a vandalism out of Commons conventions from an IP. Check it out on Commons:File_types#Sound and please eventually revert. --Ruthven (msg) 15:29, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ruthven, Commons:File types#Video "Videos must be Ogg files using the Theora video codec (with a .ogv extension)", Special:MediaStatistics # Audio "application/ogg .ogx, .ogg, .ogm, .ogv, .oga, .spx, .opus". There are several .oga files [4] and .oga makes it visible that the content is audio, while .ogg could be audio or video. 77.180.164.117 15:58, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Move requests by NewDataB

[edit]

I would greatly appreciate if you stopped moving the pages requested by NewDataB because they are not necessary. The move requests are complaining they don't list the species name, but that does not mean there is an obvious error. Often, listing the genus is fully sufficient to identify which taxon the image represents, and moving all of the pages causes unneeded edits where they are used that is otherwise easily avoided. Because the requests are not accurate in their use (Criterion 3 is not valid in these cases) please reject them. IJReid (talk) 15:04, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It. C'è differenza tra "genere" e "specie".
En. there is a difference between "gender" and "species".--NewDataB (talk) 17:21, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't mean there are any inaccuracies. The label 1DB and similar is because the file's author is DiBgd, not because of a genus or species label. IJReid (talk) 03:53, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
on the title of the file should the author be inserted ?? I have not read any wikiguide like that.--NewDataB (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, the point is that any descriptive name is allowed. Titanoceratops NT.jpg is descriptive because it tells the genus name. The species name is not mentioned, but that doesn't matter. NT is the authors initials, we have no problem with their inclusion. IJReid (talk) 01:39, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Iphthiminus

[edit]

Hallo Rzuwig,

Danke --Siga (talk) 16:45, 19 June 2018 (UTC) geändert --Siga (talk) 09:09, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:CoA mil ITA rgt fanteria 033.png

[edit]

Dear Rzuwig, could you please be so kind to "free" the current "File:CoA mil ITA rgt fanteria 033.png"? Currently it redirects to "File:CoA mil ITA btg fanteria 033.png", that is another military unit altogheter. More in detail, the 33rd Infantry Rgt "Livorno" was an unit of the army of the Kingdom of Italy disbanded in 1943, while the 33rd Infantry Btn "Ardenza" was an unit of the army of the Republic of Italy formed in 1976: as you can easily imagine the current redirect arrangment is misleading and creates a lot of confusion. If you cancel the "redirect", I will be able to upload the correct historical Coat of Arms of the WW2-era 33rd Infantry Rgt using the naming format used for all other Italian Coat of Arms so far. Thanks in advance for your kind assistance. All the best. --Arturolorioli (talk) 20:19, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Rzuwig, I've managed to somehow correct the problem myself, no need for further corrections by you. Sorry to having disturbed you. All the best. --Arturolorioli (talk) 13:56, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"File:Flag of the race.svg"

[edit]

This was an awkward translation into English (maybe even a dumb translation into English), but if it had been in its original Spanish ("Bandera de la raza"), there would have been no error at all... AnonMoos (talk) 15:05, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback!

[edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour,
