Plate images

[edit]

I deleted all the above, and a few others, as the plate designs are property of the various states an provinces from which they come. Barring specific release from those entities, these are not public domain images. Sometimes release is granted. For example, I obtained release from Province of Quebec government regarding road signs of theirs (see User:Durin/Text to Government Québec). We can't assume these images are PD without their specific acknowledgment. Also, in a number of cases these images were tagged as works of the U.S. government. They were not; they're works of the respective state governments, and the law granting PD status to the images does not apply to state works. Regards, --Durin 16:28, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think Image:Swallow_chicks444-2.jpg is an FP on Commons is it? At least this one didn't pass. I'm guessing the template was there from en and it just coincides with the template on Commons. --Dori - Talk 15:29, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese language translations

[edit]

Hey, thanks for volunteering on the help desk. Do you have any ideas as to what would be a good way to make this work? I haven't yet worked with another user on something like this, so if you have, I'd like to hear your thoughts. BrokenSphere 14:44, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Basically there are 2 groups of photos for which I need translation. One group is the ones I plan to upload here, the other group is of the nearby label/caption to ID what the subject is, which I am not planning to upload. Here are 2 possibilities for upload & ID that I thought of, if you can think of others, let me know.
I know for some that the file names will have to be changed, so I could do what happened before when someone from HK was able to point out specific streets that I had uploaded under generic names, i.e. after he made corrective edits, I reuploaded them using the correct street names and used the {{badname}} tag to get rid of the dupes. This process though gets a little more cumbersome with the second group since the pic has to be gotten rid of but not replaced. I guess I could tag these with {{delete}} and give my own reasons.
I could upload all pics for translation to a folder in a Fotki account that I have and number them, send you the link, and you could PM me back as to what they are by number. However since it's a public folder, if I post the link to the whole folder, then anyone can backtrack along the URL and check out my other vacation photos. What I could do is host them there, but post the individual URL of each pic in a numbered list, like this:
  1. DSCF4782.jpg
This way it makes it harder for someone to go back into the public section of my account, for one since my username isn't displayed. You could then make an edit as to what #1 is, and so on.
Personally I think option #2 (upload to Fotki and post the pics here) is better as it avoids having to upload to Commons and do the whole badname tag/reupload bit. Another thing is I've been uploading a few dozen other pics on a daily basis, so these would start to get buried among those, although I do track of my uploads. BrokenSphere 15:19, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will work on going through to sort out what needs to be translated and uploaded and will email you them when ready. I did upload the following so far using generic names, so you can go ahead and edit the descriptions accordingly:
Thanks. BrokenSphere 22:41, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that you're talking about these 2. I've been logging what my travel pics are of and where they are for 3 years now. As for whether or not I can distinguish whether something is genuinely identifying the subject in question or blatant advertising, all I can say is that at the time I took the photo it was in good faith that it was the former. If you put 2 texts in front of me in Chinese and to use the 2 examples, one is a poem and the other's an ad, I couldn't tell you which was which just looking at them. I'm assuming that you would be in the same situation as me if the text was written in Cyrillic or Arabic and you couldn't distinguish one word in either language from the other. Your patience and forbearance is appreciated if you still want to continue with this project, but if you'd rather not, I can ask around to see if anyone else can help out. PD-1923 in Chinese

[edit]

Hi, I noticed something weird with the translations of {{PD-1923}}: the zh-hans and zh-hant on Template:PD-1923/lang both point to Template:PD-1923/zh (rather than /zh-hans or /zh-hant). My guess is this was a typo, but since I don't speak Chinese, I may be completely wrong. Would you mind checking, and correcting if needed? Thanks, Pruneautalk 14:08, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

A (belated) thanks on editing this in order to try to make it better. Unfortunately, at the time of taking the picture, we only thought about its usefulness to us and didn't have a copy w/o people in the foreground. I thought of cropping it that way myself, but decided not to, as the cropped version doesn't provide the reference to the ground, and so it's more difficult to judge the tower height... I wish I knew how to edit myself out of that picture :-) BACbKA (talk) 10:25, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This and similar images are marked PD-not-renewed but I don't see evidence they were ever published. They also say that there is permission from NY to use them but that is not reflected at the source page (archive version). Can you provide more information about either their copyright status or the permission granted? Thanks, Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:21, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm perhaps some or all of these images were published in Biological Survey [of the Waters of New York State]/Biological Survey of the Upper Hudson Watershed.[1][2] TBD whether the copyright was renewed on these books. I'm guessing it wasn't. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:25, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I know your not responsible for the wording or that the bot put it on my page but I thought you might be interested. I see a couple of sections up that the wording on a deletion discussion template is much better. CambridgeBayWeather Talk 16:37, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy versus Nomination

[edit]

Greetings: Please only use speedy deletion for obvious, provable copyright violations. Use Deletion Nomination for anything which may or might require discussion, consideration or need to be documented carefully, e.g. based on prior actions, or similar. Cheers! File:HKIA March 26, 2020 shops.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Kaitlyn Verfuerth.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Krakow war protest 9.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: The painting and its printed version on the two bags, which are the focus of the picture, are likely copyrighted.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Dear Wikimedian,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

Round 2 will end at UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Zookey file

Hi, sorry my bad English... I see in Category:Media from ZooKeys your contact, and I need help in this file http://dx.doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.487.9262 - it's possible the upload here, in Commons? Thanks... André Koehne TALK TO ME 16:01, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I upload the File:Gruna do Cantinho Cave in Zookey archive photo by E C Igual.png (I copy data from File:Scolopocryptops troglocaudatus Gruna do Cantinho Cave.jpg), please, review the file? André Koehne TALK TO ME 19:25, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this file that I uploaded was marked as a potential copyright violation, but it says in the original image on the website that it is free to use under CC BY 4.0, which is what I marked it as. A previous version of the image from May 10 uploaded by someone else was not marked for deletion. Did I do something wrong? Thank you, Maple Doctor (talk) 04:14, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this allowed?

[edit]

Hello, I am coming to you again because you have helped me in the past. I found this image on Twitter, and was wondering if the copyright status of it is acceptable for Wikimedia. It is from an observatory, so it might be public domain, but I don't know. Are you able to tell me if it's ok for me to add here? Thank you, Maple Doctor (talk) 04:52, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS

[edit]

If you can it would be helpful for you to send an OTRS email to WikiCommons proofing that you are the copyright holder of your image File:P.J. Akeeagok.jpg. The email template you need to fill out and the email to sent it to is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates This would be helpful to make sure the images never get deleted. --142.167.24.113 01:04, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No I don't need to. I took the photo myself. Check EXIF and you'll find that this photo is consistent with the photos I upload (same phone model, with properly tagged dates, latitude and longitude). I was at an event and took all of those photos. OhanaUnitedTalk page 01:40, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When you use a picture even under general use licensing you still need to give correct information. I have updated the pic for MissD from "Aussieherps.com" not ozipythons.com I know this as it is my picture. It even stated it below from the archives section underneath. Please only use the internet for WIKI type projects if you are going to give correct credits. 202.160.109.96 11:19, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was not me who initially uploaded this file. That person was User:Viridae. I merely transferred the file from Wikipedia to Commons. If you're looking for someone to rant, at least find the right person. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:38, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
