Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:46, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Apollo_20_Logo_On_The_CSM_Control_Panel.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Apollo_20_Logo_On_The_CSM_Control_Panel.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Apollo 20 Hoax
[edit]As there was no Apollo 20 mission (see w:en:Canceled Apollo missions#Apollos 18–20), none of these images or media are released by NASA, and thus are 1) a copyvio against the creators of the images/media and 2) as titled, a hoax, which is would be considered vandalism. Please do not continue to upload images or media which violate the terms of the Commons. Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 09:01, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- The images are 1) Not NASA images and so are copyright violations and 2) There are no reliable sources for what you are bringing. There are plenty of other conspiracy websites for you to use; the wikimedia projects are not the place for it. Further deliberate disregard for wikimedia project policies may result in protective measures being taken. -- Avi (talk) 16:25, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Blocked for a day
[edit]You are not contributing constructively. Take a day off and think about what you're being asked. When you return, provide the licensing information required, without all the dancing around about the meaning of life, we don't have time to waste that way. ++Lar: t/c 04:19, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to tell you that all the video files that I uploaded have been deleted already. Also, I did not ask for a re-uploading on this case, which means I did not break any WIKI policy after this. So I do not understand why my IP is blocked by you. If you do not like someone's discussion (including the topic of life), please just leave it far away for self-protection if he/she does not break the policy. Thank you very much!
- You were not answering the questions asked of you, and in general, not contributing constructively. That's a busy page that doesn't need a lot of unfocused discussion. ++Lar: t/c 23:24, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- No, the fact is that I was answering all the questions and even repeated questions on that page. Just check it out [2] if you have time. That is one of the reasons why I can not accept your explanation of blocking my IP.--NasaTopsecret (talk) 02:34, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- I read the whole thing, carefully. I stand by my assessment. You are not contributing constructively to the discussion or helping to resolve the licensing issues. ++Lar: t/c 15:43, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- In fact, the only difference between us is that you have the authority to delete and block anything that you consider to be wrong. So, to end up our useless discussion in here, I have to say that we are the prisoners and also the jailers who have been living in the huge prison that built by ourselves, in where we always call it "FREEDOM". Anyway, I hope you will wake up in the coming 1-2 years, and good luck!
