First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Deprecation of language templates

[edit]

Hi,
I saw that you've done a great job to help reduce the number of references to deprecated language templates: thanks a lot!
For language templates that are used on less than 500 pages, I've choosen to put <s>...</s>; the yellow background with the tooltip message were intended to prepare the transition of templates that are used on more pages... I let you decide wether it's better or not to use the same yellow background and tooltip messages on templates that are not used any more (i.e. that were completely dereferenced). You may want to look at my user page to get a list of templates I'm currently working on. Also have a look at the Category:Deprecated templates. :)
Best regards from France,
-- AlNo (discuter/talk/hablar/falar) 20:13, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome.
I'm afraid I didn't spot that difference, but it doesn't really matter anymore when they're all replaced, does it? :)
--Ms2ger 08:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, it doesn't matter much :)
Thanks again for your commitment!

Hi!

I have created the image Image:EstadioPesidenteVargas.JPG. What's the difference between "Author" and "Source". I have specified that I am the author. Mansueto77 16:02, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see. I must've been too fast tagging your image, sorry.
Ms2ger 14:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ms2ger. You reuploaded this svg valid, but you messed up colors, changed red and silver. I reverted to a correct, but maybe "invalid" version. If you like, please valid this version, too. Thanks, --schlendrian •λ• 09:00, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing me, I corrected it :) Ms2ger 09:37, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks --schlendrian •λ• 10:27, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Due to en:Wikipedia:Accessibility I removed your dupe, since images attributes like the United States don't make sense in other language wikis than EN and confuse disabled readers. If there's duplication, so it should go the other way around, remove Image:Flag of the United States.svg instead.--213.155.231.26 11:35, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changes by this user have been reverted. Cheers! Siebrand 12:37, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. Thanks :) Ms2ger 14:38, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took the picture. Didn´t you see the tag PD-self?

Thank's. Mansueto77 20:27, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

decreasing svgs and make it compatibles

[edit]

Hello Ms2ger. I see that you edit Image:Flag of Sabadell.svg with the summary "Valid SVG, decrease size". I'm very interested in known how do you do this. I upload a new version with correct colours but inkscape increase the file size even I save the document as plain svg. Could you explain me how make this changes? See you, --Xavigivax (talk) 15:29, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for taking so long, I haven't been around a lot on commons. Basically, I edit it with a plain old text editor and remove all unnecessary information. In the case of flags, that's about all but the <svg> and <rect>. —Ms2ger (talk) 17:22, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ms2ger!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
