You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--Jwh (talk) 12:10, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Jwh: For categorizing existing images, I recommend Commons:HotCat gadget. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 07:16, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Copyright violations
[edit]Thanks for contributing to Commons. But do NOT upload images that you didn't take yourself. Taking photos of other images (as you did for File:University of the Nations, Kona, Hawaii.jpg, File:Solar Eclipse Live From Brandon, Manitoba.jpg, and File:Solar Eclipse on Television from Brandon, Manitoba.jpg) are derivative works and are usually not allowed, see COM:Licensing.
Or in the case of old photos (like File:Calder Station in 1916.jpg), make sure you select the right license. It certainly is not your own work, so the license should be PD-old
(not cc-by-sa-4.0
). Regards. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 15:44, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
-- I have changed the copyright attribution for the 1916 photograph as indicated.
-- I don't know what to do with the solar eclipse photographs from 1979. They are from a public broadcaster (CBC) and are of the sun. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keneckert (talk • contribs) 05:02, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for updating the license for the 1916 photo. TV broadcasts are copyrighted (therefore screenshots taken from them as well), so they were deleted. Anyway, I appreciate all your uploads. You seemed to have traveled a lot, so your collection of photos is a great addition to Commons. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 13:04, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
File:Charing Cross Station Art, London.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Hi! File:Night View from Hotel in Taxco, Mexico.jpg was uploaded by you in 04.2015 but was already published at http://keneckert.com/pictures/mexico/mexico.html = http://keneckert.com/pictures/mexico/images/pics/Mex-taxco-hotel-view.jpg (last modified: 2014). Same for (example) File:Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) at Night, Seoul.jpg, previously published via http://keneckert.com/pictures/seoul/seoul.html = http://keneckert.com/pictures/seoul/images/pics/Sel-2014-4-DDP-from-Lotte.jpg. The legal note available at http://keneckert.com/emailken.html does not specify the copyright status of (travel) photos.
Despite of having a similar username, the keneckert.com user is not necessarily the same person as user Keneckert at Commons. A verifiable connection via COM:OTRS (or by other means) must be established. To avoid potential problems with you uploads I suggest that you follow the steps described at Commons:OTRS#Licensing images: when do I contact OTRS?, sending to permissions-commonswikimedia.org a clear statement that your Commons account is related to http://keneckert.com and is authorized to licence works under a COM:L compatible license (btw, COM:FAIRUSE not allowed). -- The keneckert.com site is my website-- that's me! I have added a short indication to the website of CC4.0 copyright status on emailken.html, and on http://keneckert.com/pictures/. If there are other steps necessary please do walk me through this. Thank you - Ken Eckert. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keneckert (talk • contribs)
- Hi! That is IMHO sufficient. Thx for sharing & contributing! Gunnex (talk) 10:02, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the awesome British Library Cotton MS Vitellius A XV (Beowulf) picture. I used it on https://dæghrefn.nasqueron.org/ as background photography. Dereckson (talk) 20:07, 26 July 2016 (UTC) |
Copyright status: File:Ticket to Musical Play "Duddy" for April 18, 1984.tif
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Ticket to Musical Play "Duddy" for April 18, 1984.tif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File:Blatchford Field, late 1920s or 1930s.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)
