no fop for 2d graphic works such as engraving or maps

  •  Keep speedy keep
<Sigh> So many problem with this. This is another of the automated and inappropriate runs by Roy17 (see VP shortly), along with Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with "Pierre Holtz", Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by 創造未來,迎接康莊 and perhaps others.
Secondly, Roy has now admitted to running an unauthorised 'bot, User_talk:Roy17#Bot?, which explains why so many of these are obviously based on search strings (and claiming to not even realise they needed approval).
Thirdly, having another editor raise issues about your bulk deletions and then the next thing you tag for deletion is one of their uploads? AGF only goes so far...
Finally, see COM:FOP UK. There is FOP covering both of these. The first, in particular, is a topographic relief map, i.e. crucially three-dimensional. As a fictional map, it's also a "work of artistic craftsmanship". The second is a ceramic plaque, with a case for both "works of artistic craftsmanship" and also not being two-dimensional either. @Andy Dingley: stop your personal accusations. Counter argue by analysing the files rather than personal attacks and forumshopping.
COM:FOP UK is applicable to buildings, sculptures, models for buildings and works of artistic craftsmanship only. 2D graphic works are not covered.
Graphic works are defined as any painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart or plan, any engraving, etching, lithograph, woodcut or similar work.
File:Wilbert Awdry's map of Sodor, Talyllyn Railway museum.jpg is no different from other relief maps. Only works of artistic craftsmanship can qualify for fop.
File:Wilbert Vere Awdry - plaque detail.jpg is a 2d drawing on a plaque. It is different from a 3d model like File:Rev W Awdry and Peter Sam - 1988-05-14.jpg.--Roy17 (talk) 10:50, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"You are running an unauthorised 'bot" and "You are making bulk DRs with no valid nomination" are not personal attacks. Nor is it forumshopping to make one post to COM:VP.
Clearly you have run some sort of 'bot across various files, searching (I know not why) for the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. See Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Jamiespilsbury as well.
As to FOP on the topo map, then "FOP does not apply to 2D works such as maps" does not mean "Anything with the text string 'map' in it may be deleted." I know your 'bot can't see this, but look at the image. It is a 3-dimensional topographic relief map. It has lumps in it. It was, rather famously, the map in Awdry's study by which he created the whole scenery of Sodor. It it pretty much the opposite of "2D", even though it's still a map. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:59, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to clarify, File:Wilbert Awdry's map of Sodor, Talyllyn Railway museum.jpg is a map not covered by FOP UK, and is not artistic and not covered by FOP UK again.
It is similar to for example these relief maps https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/dorrigo-3d-british-isles.html , rather than Great Polish Map of Scotland. Can any user take a picture of these relief maps, upload it to Commons and declare s/he's not infringing copyright because of FOP?
@Andy Dingley: linking unrelated DRs together and copy-pasting the same irrelevant passages on multiple pages are forumshopping.--Roy17 (talk) 11:14, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are those maps "2D graphic works" ? If not, then work it out for yourself.
Also Awdry's map of Sodor was a creative work (and thus under UK FOP), being the origin of a fictional island. This map is actually how he invented the place, by squeezing papier mache and plaster into shape. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:17, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting from Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988:
Article 62 Representation of certain artistic works on public display. (1)This section applies to— (a)buildings, and (b)sculptures, models for buildings and works of artistic craftsmanship, if permanently situated in a public place or in premises open to the public...
Article 4 Artistic works. (1)In this Part “artistic work” means— (a)a graphic work, photograph, sculpture or collage, irrespective of artistic quality, (b)a work of architecture being a building or a model for a building, or (c)a work of artistic craftsmanship. (2)In this Part—... “graphic work” includes— (a)any painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart or plan, and (b)any engraving, etching, lithograph, woodcut or similar work...--Roy17 (talk) 17:10, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Notice the law categorises any painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart or plan and any engraving, etching, lithograph, woodcut or similar work as graphic work. Graphic work is specifically separate from work of artistic craftsmanship. The law makes no mention of 2d or 3d.--Roy17 (talk) 17:10, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: These are ceramics or papier mache sculpture, which are works of artistic craftsmanship and therefore benefit from FOP. As it happens they also have enough depth to be 3D, and also qualify under that head. Both kept.
