Captain Scarlet substituting images with bad text

This user, recently blocked on Wikipedia for sock-puppetry, has substituted at east 64 images with a text-image asking for their deletion. Many are live in Wikipedia: [1]. Pigsonthewing 19:31, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

OK, thanks. I still think that "not for fishing" IS a good policy, we need to use CU with care and respect for privacy. I don't see any other socks from this IP at this time on Commons. M7 is on the case over on Meta... (the log shows the same IP being checked there) so hopefully that should be that. A heads-up; this user's first contrib was a spiel on his userpage with something to do with heavy metal, second was replacing the Portuguese main page with the same thing, and then he uploaded two images and replaced their description pages with the spiel, again. Academy Requests Editorial Privileges Blocked on IPs 66.173.66.131 & 66.173.66.132

It has been reported to us and we have confirmed that vandalism of various wikipedia entries has originated from the Academy of Holy Angels IP 66.173.66.131. Although we will remain vigilant in our efforts we truly do not have the means to prevent this from continuing.

Hence our request: PLEASE BLOCK IP 66.173.66.131 AND IP 66.173.66.132 FROM EDITING WIKIPEDIA PAGES.

Please inform me of any further steps we at the Academy of Holy Angels may need to take in order to achieve this result.

Thank you.

graphic for Image:Flag of Germany.svg mysteriously missing

I noticed it on the Polish Wikipedia, that the flag images are red links. Checking logs for the page and page history does not explain why its no longer there (this is a very recent change). Checking usage shows that it is used all over the place but its not there. Is this some sort of vandalism or a malfunction? Right now, while editing this message, the graphic is showing on Commons, and I see that it was just uploaded at 06:09 UTC just a few minutes ago, but it still does not show on Polish Wiki (see pl:Warszawa#Miasta partnerskie for one example). --Mareklug talk 06:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

This is a technical malfunction, not vandalism. Please report any other cases on the Village pump. The Germany flag has been re-uploaded now, so just try reloading/purging cache and those usual tricks. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:00, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Spreading images in two categories.

OK, as there seems no reasoning or stopping this user:

It's about the category of a city. One single city/municipality in Flanders, Belgium.

A template with the proposal to move the thing is put on the original one. No discussion whatsoever.

Problem: Half of the images are moved. I tried to revert this twice, but the user keeps moving half of them again. Moreover, there seem to be problems with this users conduct (He's listed 3 times onCommons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems).

Now: I put lots of effort in organizing Belgian municipalities... but spreading images of a single city through two separate categories is plain nonsense. I even consider this vandalism: that's not exactly the user friendly and easy to navigate way to track the images right? Having different opinions ? Fine. Discussions ? Fine. But on the talk pages, and not at the expense of the category structure that must be accessible by regular users !

Now my question: HOW on earth can I get the images back to their original state, without this user keeping destroying the category scheme?

--LimoWreck 18:43, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

With your scheme, we can't differentiate between a Belgian municipality and the town which has the same name. So, don't dramatize the Ieper/Ypres case. There are thousands of miscategorized files in Commons which cannot be found; that's not the case for the files in Category:Ieper or Category:Ypres.
If you think that you can improve the move procedure, write a help page. It will be linked with the move template. --Juiced lemon 20:24, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
This off-topic answer is quite useless (no point going into factual mistakes above). I'm actually hoping to find a 3rd party looking at this, cause this gibberish is getting us nowhere. --LimoWreck 21:04, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

My thoughts on this: yes, Juiced lemon can sometimes be seen as difficult and the user should definetly communicate his actions better to other users, I speak from my own experience. However, he rightly pointed out to me that categories work in English, while articles remain in native tongue. Therefore the article should remain at "Ieper", while the category should be called "Ypres". I normally refer to the English Wikipedia as a guidance in that case to find out which name is normally used in English. This in itself is controversial. I believe there is a debate or proposal to at least have place names in native language as well. But take a look at Category:Munich, which is not listed as "München". The point is to make it easy for all users to find a category. I honestly would not recognise "Ieper", but I do recognise "Ypres". sincerely Gryffindor 00:25, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Gonioul 15:09, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't know that "vandalism" is the right word. Changing a tick from dark green to light green is a weird form of intentional harm, if so. But his edits do have a strange single-mindedness in their focus on tweaking image colours, and he seemed to have little familiarity with the concept of consensus, so I am unsurprised this has happened. (Although I was rather hoping his obsessiveness could be turned to something useful. But no such luck.) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 16:22, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Monarchy (talk · contribs) has systematically (and for the last 10 months or so) been adding (Spain) to wherever he finds Gibraltar on image description pages as well as categories. This is just blatant vandalism because Gibraltar is not Spanish and all these edits are simply misleading to others. Here are just some of the many examples: [5], [6], [7], [8]. And I will mention one particular case where he replaced an image of the British overseas territories (Image:LocationBritish overseas territories.png) with the same one but again with (Spain) after Gibraltar, and not to mention various other politically-based changes. In my opinion this is serious vandalism (especially the latter case) because such an image as that would appear on an encyclopaedia and provide palpably wrong information. User:Granadin is atributing himself some work [9], [10]. This images can be found with a simple search with google [11], [12] and in they respective pages seem to have copyright. He is also wanting to delete without reason some images [13]. When he was advised once [14] he answered (from anonymous ip, I can not assure it, but the content seems to be an answer to this message) with terrible words [15] (you are bad person because you are saying the administrators I am uploading images with copyright). He was blocked for "stealing repeatedly images of others with explicit copyright notice, claiming himself as ownership" and it seems he continues doing the same. Therefore, I think he should be blocked much longer and all his images should be deleted. Thanks.--Xtv 03:34, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

So far - I've warned the IP that used the terrible words (babel fish gives me enough of an idea). I've reverted the removal of deletion tags by this IP and warned them. However a number of other edits by that IP are questionable in my view (changing/providing licensing) and someone else's views would be good. I am satisfied that the two files mentioned above are copyvios and will delete them. I'll look at blocking the user concerned then. Other views on the rest of their contributions would be welcome - thanks for bringing it to our attention --Herby talk thyme 07:26, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

The problem is that it seems he took all the photos from Internet: [16] = [17], [18] = [19], [20] = [21], etc, etc, etc... I won't check if there is one of the images he uploaded which has the good copyright. I think it's much easier and safer to delete all his images. About the other user, I just don't know.--Xtv 12:53, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, he has uploaded many location images which I suppose he stole the ownership but I can't find from whom, so, all these shouldn't be deleted. Hi, I'm a new user, still finding my way around, but I'm pretty sure this isn't what I'm supposed to find when I look for info on setting up my account: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:First_steps/Account Rebekahn 08:09, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

It's no vandalism to restore a running request for deletion (especially if the requirements of the according license template aren't fullfilled). And please keep this “problem” on one page. Thank you. BTW: Please read Commons:Licensing and Commons:Derivative works. Don't put free content under licenses like GFDL. Heads up on crosswiki school vandals

Just a warning that I have come across 6 IP addresses making considerable vandal edits in the past few hours. One set begin 81. and the other 82. (see block log for info). The first I just blocked for a day (must be in a good mood) but checking en wp block logs some are on 6 month school blocks. Given that if they are bored they may well be back. Vandalism

I had some vandalism to the caption of Image:Rosetta Stone BW.jpeg. I went place a message to the user's talk page only to find that my normal vandal template that I use over on the English wikipedia, {{subst:uw-vandalism1|PageName}}, does not work here. I cannot even find documentation here of what templates are available! Help! Jeff Dahl 16:48, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

We use mainly {{Test}}, {{Test2}} and {{Test3}}, {{Test4}}. They're listed in Commons:Message templates, but I admit it took me some time to find that page the first time I looked for it. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 17:11, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Jeff Dahl 05:10, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm curious, Jastrow, did you first try Commons:Templates. If yes, was it hard to find the appropriate link on that page? If no, what was your first place to look at? I'm asking because our navigation certainly could be better... Samulili 13:34, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
In fact, I (Jeff) did just that! I could not find the appropriate place. Next I tried "vandalism" which of course returns only images of vandalism. Perhaps a see also link at the top of category:vandalism?. Jeff Dahl 05:10, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
This is personal obviously but when I first get to a wiki I'll probably look at RC. If vandalism is around then I want to know what to do about it and how to warn someone. I don't recall a wiki I have found it easy on (although experience makes it easier to know where might be good to look). I tend to try "community portal" or similar as there is usually an admin link there. Allowing my inability in languages the worst so far was finding "speedy delete" on fr wp - I got there but... --Herby talk thyme 13:42, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
Maybe we should create redirect for some of the names of common vandalism templates from other Wikimedia sites to the closest corresponding template here on Commons? LX (talk, contribs) 20:52, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
The other side of the coin - being used to "our" warnings I have been irritated when trying to use them elsewhere (particularly where they used to work) so all other project should create redirects to help us! More seriously it is one of those things that seems hard to find on a number of wikis and I am sure we could/should improve it --Herby talk thyme 10:17, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Why is the name inappropriate please, thanks (Equally why is the image an "attack" one?) --Herby talk thyme 13:15, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
It's not an attack pic per see, but this description is certainly a derisive one. User:Scot nyboer is probably some teenager trying to poke fun at a schoolmate. Deletion seems a good idea. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 13:43, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Deleted - happy to hear about the username still? --Herby talk thyme 13:55, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Since the account was used to make fun of an individual by the same name, it seems like a case of {{Imposter}}, albeit of a "real person" rather than a Commons user (as far as I know, anyway). I don't think we have a username policy on Commons, and it doesn't go against the letter of Wikipedia:Username policy#Inappropriate_usernames, but it certainly goes against the spirit. In any case, the account is obviously created solely for purposes of vandalism. LX (talk, contribs) 15:15, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Interesting. In both cases the uploader is Yaşar Kadıoğlu (talk · contribs) and the licence is GFDL & CC-BY-SA. Attack picture versions

Hi guys. Image:Neouvielle and lac d' aumar.png was brought to our attention on the French-speaking Bistro. The original picture represents a nice mountain lake, but another version was later uploaded by Rando-photo (talk · contribs), the author/uploader, with the mention "[fr: user] est un gros naze" ("[fr: user] is a twerp"). It was reverted, an edit war began and the uploader was blocked.

The file history still stands. As for me, I would delete all file revisions and let the original picture stand alone. What do you think? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 18:00, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

People misusing commons for spamming purposes

hi,

there is some being spamming a picture uploaded to your repository to spam around different mediawiki installations. the picture he includes there is located at: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/6b/XRumer_screenshot.gif/200px-XRumer_screenshot.gif

spam seems to be used to advertise a product called "XRumer"

would be nice if you could not only delete this and all relating pictures, the uploading user, but also ban the word "Xrumer" to prevent that kind of misusage in the future.

thanks

Nope, that's a "fair use" screenshot uploaded at the English Wikipedia: en:Image:XRumer_screenshot.gif. You need to complain over there. Lupo 10:26, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

BIG ip ranges. Yann did range block early on & Cary ran through the ranges when looking at this one, equally I have just reviewed the one used here & there is nothing else currently. Trouble is a fair bit of useful editing arrives via proxies here & on other wikis. These days I only block disruptive proxies - some parts of the world have little choice. Equally these were users not IP edits so they would not have been picked up other than by CUs (which was the case :)) --Herby talk thyme 17:20, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Someone has hacked the Bleach (manga) page!

A warning to Wikipedia administrators:

I access the Bleach (manga) page fairly often, and I definitely visited it the day before yesterday. But when I went to access the page a few minutes ago, there was a very weird picture with obscene language on it. The page is off-center and the picture is fixed in place, so it cannot be scrolled out of view. I believe that someone may have hacked it and put that image there.

Just as an FYI - you are on Commons - not Wikipedia. Secondarily, Bleach pictures are not allowed on Commons. I advise you go back to Wikipedia and post there. Thank you. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 07:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Suspected vandalism

The user Aegean Boy is removing license information from several kurdistan-related images in order to promote deletion. I checked some original license informations and seemed valid (eg. flickr CC), so I suspect vandalism. Basilicofresco (talk) 09:30, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

image version vandalism by Jhon33 (talk · contribs)

This user has vandalised Image:Bill Gates in Poland cropped.jpg twice by "version-uploading" first a distorted version of the original image and then a totally different image over the original image, while maintaining the now wrong description and thereby surrendering the image for inadvertent deletion. When looking at the other contributions of this user, I found that he had done the same with Image:L Sanger.jpg. As all of his 4 contribs have been (an especially nasty form of) vandalism, a block or even a ban might be warranted. Eventually, the Gates image should be protected. --Túrelio (talk) 20:29, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

shankbone.org is blacklisted at Wikipedia

shankbone.org is blacklisted at Wikipedia. As such it cannot be linked to there, nor can its blog. The images here should not contain an address to a website that is blacklisted on Wikipedia.--72.68.30.127 15:39, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Just tried it, it definitely is not blacklisted on my main Wikipedia. If we would forbid anything only one of the projects forbid, not much would be left. If it is blacklisted on meta, that is something different, but even then we would be able to put it on a local whitelist. -- Cecil (talk) 15:56, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Background for other admins: blog.shankbone.org is temporarily blocked locally on the English Wikipedia edition because of the stalking of David Shankbone originating from the IP range of the author of the message above. The stalker seems to have taken the addition of blog.shankbone.org to the English Wikipedia local blacklist as an order to remove references to all shankbone.org addresses on other projects. This would violate the licensing requirements of the images and is done solely for disruptive purposes. I have protected affected images and blocked the IP addresses involved, and will continue to do so as I spot further vandalism and harassment. LX (talk, contribs) 16:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

User:Pérez (header was User:O)

This user, an administrador, is doing an edit's war on my own work. I request only to delete some images but hi allways is reverting my changes, but I only ask to delete my own files. Pérez (talk) 03:51, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

May I ask what the reason is? If you have a good reason we can normally accommodate deleting your own uploads. If O is removing the templates I imagine there is good reason; they are a good admin. Let's wait for a comment before anything further.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 12:21, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Pretty much the only reason for deletion is a self request. I removed the templates and deleted the DRs because such deletion would be against Commons policy and various laws. Had self request not been the reason, I would have only removed the speedy deletion templates. I do recall some being labelled as "privacy violation", but those images do not seem to have anything that would spark personality rights problems. --O (висчвын) 17:12, 27 July 2008 (GMT)

@Perez, please see what I wrote you on User talk:Coronellian. --Túrelio (talk) 12:30, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, what Túrelio said. Rocket000 (talk) 20:06, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
The answer to that was a full-blown blackmail threat against Commons/Wikimedia[42] by the Pérez-sockpuppet Coronellian: If Wikipedia or the sisters projects do not delete it unfortunately i must advise the public that it is not a good idea to collaborate in a project that do not respect the copyright of his users.[43] Though I wasn't much involved in that case, now I would ask some more experienced colleagues to take over. Among the uploads of this user, I did identify 1 real copyvio, but I did check only 2 or 3 of his files. He is now tagging his files as copyvio but without providing any reason or proof. It may be that they are copyvios or it may be a trick to get his way. He may simply have a problem with being honest about why he wants the images deleted. --Túrelio (talk) 20:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
It looks like this person wants to use any speedy deletion rationale to get his contributions deleted, even one that had nothing to do with the associated policy. I've reverted all of these edits, and if there is further blackmail, blocks on both of these users may come into consideration. --O (висчвын) 02:20, 28 July 2008 (GMT)

Coronellian & Pérez are socks here from a CU perspective. Feel free to ask another CU to check if you wish - I have mailed them. --Herby talk thyme 17:23, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi. I think Pérez wants to delete the images because they have recognizable people on it, and because of what the images theme is (sindical-political demonstrations), this could perhaps violate the (spanish) right of self image and intimacy. If not deleted, please sholud the faces of the images be blurred. -Aleator (talk) 18:39, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
The underlying issue here still needs addressing. User:Pérez (I think) still has issues with wanting files to be deleted. Pérez is no longer blocked and I have suggested that they deal with this in a proper way. I'm guessing that "es" may be needed to deal with this in the best possible way. I have pointed out that my involvement relates to my CU tasks & I have not been involved with the deletion aspects. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 06:59, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Spam, out of scope, gone :). Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:21, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Hm, the reason I was wondering is that {{Lang-ar}} is actually used as a language template for Arabic. {{Ar}} also exists and seems to serve the same purpose. Does it? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 07:25, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Must be a redlink to the deleted one somewhere I guess. We could simply copy the content of the good one to the one I deleted? Or a bot "replace" task for the redlink one? --Herby talk thyme 07:33, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
I think I understand now. People have been using {{Lang-ar}} because of en:Template:Lang-ar. It's used for untransliterated strings in the Arabic script. {{Ar}} is a “block“ template by default but there is an inline option. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 07:48, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Jeblad seems to misunderstand what you mean by getting “permission of the photographer,” but you are of course perfectly right that he should forward the permission to OTRS. He did so 6 hours ago, but as the email from the copyright holder said “here are images you may use when updating Wikipedia,” I asked Jeblad to get a clearer statement regarding the alleged Creative Commons license. --Kjetil_r 21:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Agree with Kanonkas (talk · contribs) and Kjetil_r (talk · contribs), hopefully we will get a clearer statement back from the user on OTRS. Cirt (talk) 22:22, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Update: Jeblad asked the copyright holder if they could make some images freely available, and made it clear to the copyright holder that “images will have to be released under an open license,” and he then got the reply that “here are images you may use when updating Wikipedia.” In my opinion, this is not enough to claim that the copyright holder agreed to use CC-BY-SA (“open license” could mean a noncommercial or a nonderivative license), and I told Jeblad that he need to get a more explicit release. It does not seem like Jeblad is willing to do that, though. --Kjetil_r 13:56, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Image:Friends eating lunch at the home of Michael Lucas on Fire Island.jpg has been vandalized multiple times by different AOL proxy IP addresses, which are hard to block. This is part of the long running harrassment case where David Shankbone is being stalked and harrassed by a particular New York City person.

That image needs to be at least semi-protected for a while, and it's likely that the vandals will target other pages of Davids (there's a long history and pattern of that...).

Thanks. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 23:58, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Image:Friends eating lunch at the home of Michael Lucas on Fire Island.jpg is vandalized by an IP again [47]. Probably the same user which started vandalism before the image was protected for 2 days. --Nerzhal | ?! 15:47, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

A suggestion about the Shankbone stalker

Hey guys, so many of my images are vandalized right now, that I'm going to start to make Shankbone categories to make it easier to find the photos, and mass protect them if needed (can a script be written for that, if a list of photos is provided?) Otherwise, we have some serious defamation and personality rights issues that they are daily bringing. This is the banned Gay Pornography vandal on Wikipedia. They have recently switched servers from their old 72.76 range, amongst others.

Does anyone have an objection to my creating Shankbone categories, such as Shankbone Fire Island. And does anyone know if we can write a script to instantly protect a large swathe of photos? It would be a cool tool for admins to have, especially if situations like this pop up more in the future. He is nothing more than an annoyance, and I have learned he is handicapped, and I may be close to tracking him down; if my information is correct, he'll be getting a visit from the FBI. I'll be pressing full charges, which are severe given the death threats. I also have a lawyer friend who is working on a lawsuit so that I can subpoena Verizon and AOL's records on the IP range, and who is using it when - they only give that information out if you raise a "John Doe" court case so that you can get subpoena power.

In the meantime, advice on my ideas, or in general? I'm open. It is better to e-mail me privately, because the stalker likes nothing more than to have attention paid to him. The less said on-wiki, the less satisfaction he gets. I'm part of one Cyberstalker list where we monitor his (and other stalker) actions. I'm saying all this on-wiki because this guy may want to cut now; I'm not known as a shrinking violet, and I have a lot of lawyer friends and influential contacts. If he ceases immediately, then he saves me the trouble of all this, trouble that I am more than willing to go through. Really, why not join us instead of fight us, man? You are clearly smart and articulate, but your using those talent for nothing but bad; it's time to let go of whatever anger drives you, and start to be a part of something that is far more satisfying than what you do, which has a name: terrorism. That's also a crime. Seriously, you're in way over your head, and I know how to find you. I just am very busy, and would prefer this all to go away. I would even adopt you as a User. I see intelligence in your humor, and you have a lot of time. We could use you at Wikimedia. Really. Why not call a truce. Is your anger that Michael Lucas wouldn't meet you really worth being the person you are? Who will people remember more in twenty years? David Shankbone, or the person who vandalized. It's time to turn yourself around.

If my stalker agrees, and agrees to become a member of a Wiki project, I will help them anyway I can. But if they continue this, I will first track down the person I and Michael suspect; if that is wrong, your internet records will be subpoenaed and we will discover who you are, and you have committed some major federal crimes (and, of course, state). It's just not worth it. I don't find you or "the others" scary; you just seem kind of sad, maybe even lonely. But if you stop this campaign, right now, AND become a Wikipedia contributor in good standing, I will personally argue for you to be unbanned. Your choice. But this situation will end, one way or another. Trust me on that.

To the rest of you guys - thanks for all your help; I'm sorry you have to waste time on this stuff; I thought about becoming an admin on here just so that I can handle it, but I don't know if I'm admin material. Let me know about the categories and the auto-protect script idea. --David Shankbone (talk) 05:15, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Do you know how to mark a category as hidden? Look at how Category:Media by Cary Bass is formatted. All there in one place. I can think of one way to protect regular pages from vandalism... transclusion onto a protected page. But I'm not sure how that would work with Image pages. Might be worth a try. Bastique demandez 05:33, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Didn't work :-( Someone should file a bug! Anyway, keep your watchlist watched and we'll semiprotect the images as need be. Bastique demandez 05:53, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

This will be an unusual report, but this administrator is removing categories from images without explanation. S/he had just empty a hole category.--Sdrtirs (talk) 21:04, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Looks like common sense actions to me. Lycaon (talk) 21:31, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't see the problem. I've removed:
  • 'sun tanning' category from images of alcohol structure diagram and photos of people not sun tanning,
  • 'pornography' from photos of naked women (anyone disagrees?)
  • 'shorts' from photo of a man in trousers and a lady in panties.

Also, I've removed whole category of pictures which were:

  • of very poor quality
  • very creepy, because they were made from behind some bushes
  • depicting people in private situations - eg. massaging each other or undressing in hiding.

Removal of this category was made with consent of other commons users/admins on IRC channel.

If that's vandalism, so yeah, I'm guilty. --Leafnode 12:03, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Some IPs keep vandalizing the pages with a couple images on them can someone look into this? the images are here [50] [51] I hope Im doing this right. on english wiki they kep saying the images are trademarked but when i checked around one of them is from the national park service website and the other is from the cover of a book about OSS so Im pretty sue they are real government images. Herby, I'm interested in your thinking there (not critical, just interested), as I would have been tempted to block for much longer as a vandalism-only account. Would that have been out of line in your view? --MichaelMaggs (talk) 16:16, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Agreed - however I am not sure it was vandalism (I'd go longer if I was sure what it actually was - could just be a puzzled user?)? Equally I prefer to block IPs lightly to start with (something about AGF IIRC :)). --Herby talk thyme 16:24, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Just wondered if I had missed something obvious. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 17:27, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, it could have been the template itself, which would have been far worse. Still I definitely think it was done on purpose. Who else would repeatedly paste more than 1 MB of ParserFunction calls onto a page? I think it was some sort of teasing. -- Slaunger (talk) 20:48, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

I sent asks to my friends who were so kind and have been sent me their photos to upload them by me onto Commons. I did it only for respect to them, for their time and politeness. Many of them have already sent permissions to OTRS. That was the last job I have done for Commons. During two years I have uploaded over 1000 images, everyone of them was with permission of the author. Sterkebak has destroyed me as Commons user. He has broken my credibility and I cannot work with people who don't believe me. Sami się dalej bawcie - without me... pjahr @ 20:13, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Dear Pjahr, i didn't say that i don't believe you. En i don't believe your credibility. You have uploaded some image's you have permission from the author and i am sure you have but i askt you to send the permission to otrs so it can be archived in the system. It was not met to attack you and i am sorry if you did think so. Sterkebaktalk 20:39, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

This is so unfortunate how this misunderstanding got out of hand. SterkeBak, when you see a user repeatedly undoing your edits, try to resolve the issue with the user directly. Only when the problem cannot be solved by communication, post your concerns for administrators to see. But this time you accused a valuable contributor of vandalism. Some people take these things personally, so we shouldn't press our points of view on them in such a manner that they feel unappreciated. These warning tags are very useful, but they're very impersonal and don't reflect the true attitude of people working together on one issue. Please resolve the problem in a relaxed way not to hurt anybody's feelings. I hope Pjahr will reconsider and not take this misunderstanding as a reason to leave this project. --Kimsə (talk) 08:22, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

In my eyes it would be no deprivation for us to bann banned users from fr: de: or en: per default if we can proove they are the same. Minimum requirement should be a bann on minimum one big project (en,fr,de) and on one other. Maybe we should discuss about this. abf /talk to me/ 08:33, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
No that's absolutely not how we work. Though I'm discussing with Herby if it's a possible block evasion. --Kanonkas(talk) 08:43, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
At the moment commons provides a host for many banned users from big projects. Because we have got other rules we often dont bann them and they cause damage here only slowly (mostly they do not do so much really good work) and they keep on wikiing - and thats the problem! Banning (prooved!!) trolls also here makes them having no home-wiki and it removes the "fun" of wikiing, what will result in a lower number of puppets at the other projects, and every trollsocket is one too much! abf /talk to me/ 13:56, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

The edits are being orchestrated and the CUs are aware of the situation. These edits are likely to be from open proxies/compromised machines so blocks are perfectly acceptable (!). I'll deal with the remaining issues tomorrow. Thanks folk --Herby talk thyme 19:24, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Just for info, Grawp goes on /b/ and posts "Please go to <link> and click save." These are most of the time not open proxies, but I see this is some kind of "imitating" Grawp. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

You should keep on contributing here. It's better if you mention it once too much than one too less.
I think it's all about the en:Macedonia naming dispute. Maybe he is a Greek national who feels pissed on by the of Macedonia.
However, 1) Commons is not the greek Wikipedia so I reverted the contribution by SotosfromGreece 2)Commons is multilingual. There is no reason to remove other languages, because it's a greek map. In article Deutschland the languages also don't get removed.
I kept the new style of the description and the new flag, because I prefer them. If somebody prefer the old ones change it.

Bizarre vandals attack

I've now blocked 7 users in the past hour who are creating .js to make random disruptive edits on Commons. They are also abusing multiple accounts & results have been passed on to CUs. Can I ask those around to keep an eye - watching new user pages for .js ones which are using "special:random" to replace text will lead anyone to them. Block immediately please. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:35, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

It's a cross-wiki problem, this user botify is web browser to automatically disrupt page, accounts at least on fr: and en: exist too. Phe (talk) 12:17, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Not sure what else anyone wants to know? Looking at the CU list now it is cross wiki. I saw some strange user names (in the first batch of three) all of whom creating a monobook.js (eg) which was set to edit random pages (only one had really got going). It made me look deeper and I found all three on the same IP. Shortly afterwards two more appeared (blocked immediately) on another IP and then two more on a further IP.
The info went to the CU list and the first names are locked anyway. Log watching can be worthwhile :). Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:31, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of comment on talk page

I would like to draw attention to this edit. I haven't reacted except posting here. I don't know the policy but think the user should be warned by someone, at least. --Ayacop (talk) 09:19, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

You've taken the second step before the first one. First, ask the other editor what happened (may even be a technical error) or why she did remove the comment of another user (that is not o.k., of course); if she doesn't give a reasonable reply, then you can post here. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 09:29, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Male-penis.png Stew22 05:44, 12 January 2009

I do think its a bit funny and juvenile, but I also think you guys would do a better job.

    • I'm posting this here as I did not see the post under vandalism.

Cheers.

Commons is not censored, we have a lot of penises and vaginas here, we also have images of masturbation, ejaculation, urination and so on. Dont care about File:Male-penis.png, it will be deleted in a week: the author is a passing by contributor, his job here is done by posting is penis he will never come back - but he failed to provide a free license. --Martin H. (talk) 07:03, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Nominated for deletion due to lack of educational value with respect to our existing "collection". In addition to what Martin said, I'd like to add that it is impossible to check every single incoming file, and that we get quite a lot of penis pictures, which usually don't last long (unless they have significant educational value). --Eusebius (talk) 07:10, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

This user has been vandalizing WP, and appears to uploaded derivative images to Commons under a GNU Free Documentation license. Images including File:All-American.jpg and File:Ophan.gif have questionable copyright status at best and probably are not legally available under their claimed licensing. He has at least five uploaded images that can be seen here.

Nobody is blanking everything relating to Austria-Hungary in World War I that's absolutely untrue. I simply tryed to lay together unnecessary categories with only one or three files for to make a better oversight and to avoid chaos. If User:Rcbutcher thinks that a good work is vandalism...so you can make for every single photo an own category .....my god!............--Steinbeisser (talk) 12:42, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I stand by what I said. This user blanked category comments, removed category info from images, replaced accurate specific categories with vague irrelevant categories, without providing any comments to explain reason for changes.
Examples : http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Skoda_24_cm_mortar_M_1898&diff=17792592&oldid=16858529
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Skoda_24_cm_mortar_M_1898.jpg&diff=17792588&oldid=9510386
This was done wholesale, as far as I can see for every image and category relating to Austria-Hungary in World war I. If you had no intent to vandalise the pages, I suggest you gain an understanding of the subject and how Wikipedia categories work before you jump in and make wholesale changes like you did. You basically wrecked the entire WWI Austria-Hungary ordnance category. 2 hours later you had done nothing to implement any "alternative structure". Rcbutcher (talk) 13:08, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

User:Rcbutcher reverted all my work for to lay together unnecessary categories with only one or three files for to make a better oversight and to avoid chaos. Is he Godfather or somewhat else?--Steinbeisser (talk) 12:47, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

It is, how it is. User:Rcbutcher seems to be a fan of to create new categories, no matter if they are useful or not. That cannot be the sense of commons. Please get rid of him and revert all his changes - the common user would be thankful!--Steinbeisser (talk) 13:16, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Please use the talkpage before placing/removing new category. Please talk about it and stop the editwarring. Abigor talk 13:29, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
    • Please note that the rule that you need a filled category with many elements before you can create a new category is coming from wikipedias and is not applicabale at commons. In commons, one can create a category with one single image if it simplifies the categorisation/finding or when you are confident that this category should/could have many more pictures. --Foroa (talk) 13:58, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
    • I checked, and indeed, Steinbeisser tried to empty and eliminate some quite interesting categories. Most rare but interesting categories start small remember (this is a collectors corner). As a general rule: never empty categories from another user before consulting him and proposing valid alternative category schemes. --Foroa (talk) 14:10, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
It seems that Steinbeisser is trying to improve things, not vandalising as I first thought.. which is good.. but please discuss with others before you make big changes like you did - removing category tags from photos is bad because it effectively makes them disappear. Also the connection tags on category pages to the other language Wikis are important so people can find articlers relating to them. Add new categories first, then discuss whether the new categories are better than the old ones. Rcbutcher (talk) 15:16, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

okay,okay --15:46, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I have reverted a piece of vandalism at File:The Chaser pantomime horse stunt (5 September 2007, Sydney) 2.jpg, where User:Abigor uploaded a new version of the image completly different to the existing with the edit summary "please use biggest version". I don't know what's going on with this image, but it has been repeatedly vandalized by IPs, and the discussions on the talk page are pretty harsh (basically just shouting insults at each other, for no obvious reason). Can someone look into this? Looks like the license is wrong, and the source is unknown, but it is in use on a userpage at es.wp, so it would be nice if someone how can speak Spanish can sort this thing out. --Tryphon (talk) 14:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

I've sent an email to Usuario:Fquezada who is allegedly depicted in that image.--Túrelio (talk) 14:56, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
This is not user Fquezadas image. The image at es.wp was embedded in October 2006, the image was deleted in Nov 2006. The spanish user has nothing to with this image uploaded in Nov 2008. So deleted it: not used userpageimage and (maybe) uploaders request (in a very bad tone). --Martin H. (talk) 21:44, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't think this is vandalism, the user just doesn't know how it works around here. I changed the information template to reflect the own work. Multichill (talk) 14:42, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Fangusu

User:Fangusu has been banned from the English Wikipedia after a long history of being uncooperative, editwarring, copyright violations, causing general damage, and ultimately refusing to amend her behavior to be acceptable. She has a long history of sockpuppetry now (see sockpuppetry case archive). She has now created an account here to upload images for her Wikipedia sockpuppet accounts to add to articles, making it more difficult to handle her continued vandalism. I am not familiar with the Wikimedia Commons blocking practices, but I'm sure that this cannot be considered acceptable behavior. Please take whatever action is considered appropriate, and I will continue my efforts to clean up after this user once I have seen what that is. If there are any policy pages that could help me learn how to better deal with this cross-wiki issue, I'd appreciate it if someone could leave links to them on my talk page. Thanks! Icarus3 (talk) 05:36, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello,
I don't see any really bad edits yet on Commons, a few copyvios but that is normal from people coming from En.wiki (because En.wiki accept Fair use and Commons not). I see even some good contributions.
I think this is a case of AGF, if the user doesn't do something wrong here she is welcome to stay and contribute. I don't know how other admins think about this but I am not placing a block just because she is blocked indef on En.wiki. I would say she is welcome on Commons untill she does something really wrong.
Best regards,
Abigor talk 14:04, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm not saying she should be blocked here just because she's indef blocked on en.wiki, but because she's using her accounts on commons to facilitate her continued sockpuppetry there, in violation of her block, by uploading images here and then using sockpuppets or IPpuppets to add them to Wikipedia. It's a tough situation, because she's not an outright vandal but rather a recalcitrant copyright violator and editwarrior who refused an extended attempt to get her to learn and abide by copyright rules and behavior guidelines. It's true that some of her edits are useful, but she simply caused too much disruption.
That said, if the Commons admins and policies favor your approach, I can understand that. My interest is not in pursuing her across the wide range of the internet (I have no interest in the non-wikimedia wikis she edits, for instance), but only to contain her continued abuse of en.wiki. I will accept the decisions of Commons admins more familiar with Commons practices, and try to work within those parameters. --Icarus3 (talk) 18:33, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Secret renaming operation by user:foroa, user:Siebrand, and user:Multichill

Resolvedthe Commons:Administrators' noticeboard, subpage "Vandalism" is not the appropriate page for this. Cirt (talk) 15:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

The users are have already renamed and are continuing to rename a couple hundred categories from unknown to unidentified. Category:Unknown Carabidae, Category:Unknown Lepidoptera, Category:Unknown Odonata and so on. There was no discussion. The categories were not even tagged for moving. These three users just decided about this operation just among themselves. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 09:40, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

There is nothing secret, this is part of the daily harmonisation work, mostly based on simple common sense and majority naming. When I started harmonisation of unknown/unidentified naming, there where about 60 "Unknown xxx" items , 700 "unidentified xxx". See for your self: Unknown categories and Unidentified categories. You might think that we do all that moving work for fun and to annoy people. This happens to be not the case. --Foroa (talk) 10:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
(ec) It seems to me that "unidentified" is the most used term, as in Category:Unidentified insects or Category:Unidentified subjects. A quick search gives this 2006 discussion. The change wasn't particularly controversial. Maybe you could have contacted one of the users on their talk page before reporting them for "vandalism"? Pruneautalk 10:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Also, "unidentified" is more specific, especially when dealing with species or similar, whereas "unknown" is an Commons-internal category-term that is displaid when the source of a image/file is missing.--Túrelio (talk) 11:19, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
The vast majority of the species in those categories are indeed known (to science) but unidentified. There could be an unknown category structure, but this would contain only species that are not described and as yet unknown to science. As such the renaming exercise is the common sense thing to do. Lycaon (talk) 14:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

A two year old discussion is obviously not sufficient. It is not to much to ask for a proper procedure; putting moving or cfd templates on the category pages starting a discussion and waiting for some time for reactions. Currently the whole thing is a giant secret operation. Obviously Foroa does not have to follow commons guidelines. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 12:41, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Apart from the fact that you don't like how these moves were handled, do you have a specific reason to oppose to these changes? Do you have an example of a category for which the Unidentified denomination would be wrong? –Tryphon 12:45, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Commons:Categories for discussion/Current requests/2009/03/Category:Chemistry (unsorted). Because this whole operation is being covered up other mistakes will only be found out afterwards when other people start complaining. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 13:21, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
  •  Comment - I question whether the vandalism board is even the right board for this as the users were clearly acting in good faith for the project. Cirt (talk) 13:50, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Cirt, the answer is that it is not. I concider this discussion closed, and would urge anyone with opinions about "unidentifyed" vs "unknown"/"unsorted" etc to voice their concerns at the relevant talkpages and/or Commons:Categories for discussion. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 13:58, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Finn, there are no relevant talkpages because Foroa thinks that a discussion is unecessary plus my attempts to discuss the matter are ridiculed or ignored ([68]).--Cwbm (commons) (talk) 14:06, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

First things first: Are the above described actions vandalism? Certainly not, whether or not they are appropriate (most probably) is a different matter, but they are in good faith. Thus, the "vandalism" board is not the appropriate place for this. Cirt (talk) 14:16, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
They are clearly not in good faith. If they were Foroa would not circumvent the discussion. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
This is clearly not vandalism, thus this is an inappropriate location for this discussion. Cirt (talk) 15:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Then have at least the grace to tell me the appropriate location. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 15:16, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Gracefully open a discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion. Regards. Lycaon (talk) 15:26, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

School IP making a nuisance of itself... WJBscribe (talk) 13:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Blocked for 1 day.--Túrelio (talk) 13:56, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, administrators. Please block this IP 75.175.242.206, because he or she is vandalizing pages. Me and Boingerbox the red robot (talk) has been trying to warn him or her all day, but he or she just won't give up. The block I recommend must be at least longer than one week. Hope you block him or her... Bulbasaur1928 (talk) 00:14, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Done by Mike.lifeguard. --Túrelio (talk) 07:26, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Please keep an eye out for colour+robot-themed accounts (see my block log, for example).  — Mike.lifeguard 11:25, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Asinine vandal at work

I just noticed activity by one of our more infantile vandals User:Jack the Blipper at File:3ahead.png I have blocked the user name at Wikiquote already. ~ Kalki (talk) 07:28, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Kalki - appreciated & ✓ Done --Herby talk thyme 07:43, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Deleted image

I have just noticed that image Image:Ligia 2.jpg has been deleted. I am the owner of the copyright and have released it to public use according to the provisions of the GFDL license. This was stated in the description of the image. The picture has never been published and I am in possession of the original. There is no justification to the deletion of the picture and I kindly request it to be restored.Afil (talk) 17:06, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

✓ Done I restored the image per request on my talkpage already, discussion uploaders talkpage. --Martin H. (talk) 17:11, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Some vandalism here: [69] --Jarekt (talk) 21:34, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, thanks for reverting that. Only edit from that ip, so I don't think a block i necessary here. Finn Rindahl (talk) 21:55, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Minor vandalism or experimentation: [70] - already reverted. --Jarekt (talk) 15:38, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Another vandal: [71] - already reverted. --Jarekt (talk) 15:41, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

As above, I don't think a block on these IPs is necessary as they've calmed down. Sometimes it might be useful to warn vandals using {{Test}} etc. Thanks, →Na·gy 16:03, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Sockpuppet of banned user from Wikipedia:en, blocked over there by me, needs a block here too per [72]. See [73] for context. Acroterion (talk) 01:55, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

✓ Done & thanks, Finn Rindahl (talk) 03:12, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Objective333

Objective333 (talk · contribs) has been banned from the English Wikipedia for harrassing other users and abusing the unblock template. He's now come here solely to vandalize my userpage and talk page. Someguy1221 (talk) 17:59, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

✓ Done - User is blocked. Cleaned up the history for your userpage and talkpage as extra service. Huib talk 18:04, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

The user in question is vandalising pages, and has migrated here after being blocked by other wikimedia projects. Edits include: removal nonsense vandalism. Recommendation: Skip warnings and block for 4 weeks as he's beyond experimentation. --Sigma 7 (talk) 17:29, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

✓ Done - I did give the user his first and last warning, I am not going to block somebody before he gets a warning. Huib talk 17:46, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, edit conflict. I blocked this IP as a crosswiki-vandal and I'm not sure if I should be going to unblock after having a look at its global contribs... →Na·gy 17:49, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

This user, as well as at least a few others, are sockpuppets of User:Gerald Gonzalez in the English Wikipedia, and is uploading copyvio images in Commons, despite several warnings. Blakegripling ph (talk) 08:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and here's another one: User:Grey Glinn; probably another GG sock. 01:12, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Although is change from category:Immune system to category:Immune systems is obviously not without objection [74] he doesn't care to start a discussion but just reverts [75]. And this is not the only such change [76],[77]. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 06:50, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Regarding immune systems: the guidelines say the category names must be in the plural form, therefore I see no problem in Ingolfson's edits. --Eusebius (talk) 07:29, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
You don't know the nameing conventions of the english wikipedia by any chance? --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 07:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't know much about what happens on the Wikipedias. --Eusebius (talk) 09:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
It is also plural. Guess how the category on the english wikipedia is named. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 09:59, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps you should try talking to people, and starting a real discussion, instead of threatening them aggressively. The diff you provided doesn't show any argument against this change, just you saying that you disagree (why?) and consider it vandalism. I'm sure you would have better success if you actually tried and explain your point of view. –Tryphon 08:55, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
