English: Kolkata (Bengali: কলকাতা), formerly Calcutta, is the third largest city in India and the capital of West Bengal. It is located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. With its sprawling suburbs, its population exceeds 15 million, making it India's third-largest metropolitan area and urban agglomeration. Kolkata served as the capital of British India until 1911. Kolkata is noted for its revolutionary history, ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to the leftist and trade union movements.
हिन्दी : कोलकाता (बांग्ला: কলকাতা; पुराना नाम कलकत्ता या अंग्रेजी में कैलकटा) भारत का एक महानगर है और यह पश्चिम बंगाल की राजधानी है।
বাংলা : কলকাতা ভারতের এক মহানগর ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গ রাজ্যের রাজধানী। শহরটি হুগলী নদীর পূর্ব তীরে অবস্থিত। কলকাতা শহরে প্রায় ৫০ লক্ষ লোক বসবাস করেন। কলকাতা মহানগর অঞ্চলের জনসংখ্যা ১ কোটি ৪০ লক্ষেরও বেশি, যা ভারতের তৃতীয় বৃহত্তম মহানগর অঞ্চল।
