Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:54, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

File:Logofnl.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
|
File:Logofnl.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.
We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Copyright status: File:Hnna_en_Nico.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Hnna_en_Nico.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
Your note
editI see your note at Commons talk:Deletion requests/File:Logofnl.jpg. In the case of File:Logofnl.jpg, almost every such image is copyrighted. You tagged with PD-self but that would mean you created it yourself - which you did not. Promotional images like that will be deleted very quickly. The same goes for most images that you find in a general Google search. Most photos of modern people here were either taken by the uploader or were obtained from the subject themselves by asking them via COM:EMAIL... Some photos are public domain due to age, some because they are works of the U.S. Government, etc. See COM:PD for other examples. I tagged your File:Hnna en Nico.jpg for deletion because the license you chose says 70 years, but the photo is only 65 years old... w:Flickr is a source of some free photographs, but you need to be careful that they are released freely, and for any purpose including commercial and to make derivatives. See COM:L for valid licenses... As for using other people's work here, of course you can. That's why the project exists! Everything here is free to use for any purpose as long as you follow the text of the given license. Feel free to ask at COM:HD or CT:L for help... Wknight94 talk 14:44, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- In the case of File:Detailkaart New Brunswick.jpg, you might want to read COM:DW as well. If you take an unfreely copyrighted image and make small changes or additions, the resulting image is still likely unfreely copyrighted and will probably be deleted. Wknight94 talk 14:47, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking time to educate me. I have left an message on your discussion-page.--Williwaw (talk) 15:18, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- Don't worry, I don't think you are intending harm. You are just learning. And you are correct that this is not an easy place to get used to. I am happy to help you through and most others are too. You can always ask for help at COM:HD, etc... As for File:Monument_3_kinderen.jpg, please beware of COM:DW. If you simply draw a copy of the monument, it can still be deleted as a derivative work. The sad truth is that there are many images that we simply cannot upload here. The only way around on this project is to either get permission from the author (the sculptor in this case) or the author's heirs, or to wait until the copyright has expired (public domain). On many of the individual Wikipedias, fair use images are allowed under certain circumstances. If there was an article about the File:Monument_3_kinderen.jpg statue, it could probably be uploaded to English Wikipedia under fair use. But Commons does not allow fair use at all. As for File:Hnna en Nico.jpg, if the photo was taken by a relative of yours, you may be able to contact people at COM:OTRS to claim you have permission. But for File:Hnna en Nico.jpg, how did it get on to that http://www.verzetsmuseum.org web site?... I have deleted File:Detailkaart New Brunswick.jpg since it is a derivative work of Google Maps and Google Maps are not freely available... For the files where you requested permission, if permission is sent to COM:OTRS, the files can be undeleted, so you don't need to re-upload. Wknight94 talk 16:14, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Thank you
edit- You're welcome!
- You're also right: Commons is not an easy playground because we focus on releasing copyright-free images and files. I see that you've been given some useful pointers about licensing. What could I add to this is: the better way to get freely reusable images is to make them yourself :-) Of course this won't help in some areas but sometimes you'll find people asking you to take this or that picture they cannot gather themselves...
