Important message for file movers

edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:Lei 2.774 - Altera o Brasão de Barroso em 2017.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Moção do arquivo Symbole-gv.png.jpg para Symbole-gv.jpg

edit

Leonardo José Raimundo (talk) 02:24, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

WLE2020 Portugal

edit

Hi, thank you for your previous votes for Wiki Loves Earth. You can now vote the next round of WLE2020 on Montage.

It's a double second round, this means that it's the same voting method as before, but now the sample is more homogeneous and you should be more careful and consistent. Plus, every juror votes all of them, the result is therefore very smooth.

I wanted to give you less files, but the previous step was so fragmented that I had to put all files above 5/10 just to be sure. So it's 567. It will take one hour if you do it quickly.--Alexmar983 (talk) 22:11, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Can you extract one more image?

edit

Thank you for File:Plate I-Argonauts of the western Pacific 1922 (page 45 crop).jpg from File:Argonauts of the western Pacific 1922.djvu. Can you also extract the other image? I already used it at my new article w:Off the verandah and the other one would be relevant too. Plates 3 and 4 on the next page would be nice too. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 05:07, 9 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Piotrus: ! I'm a member of your fancruft. Now I can proudly states: "I have helped Piotrus. And you?". Serious talking, I cropped the plates II,III and IV. I don't remember if the book have another plates, but hope this can help you. If you need another help don't hesitate to request. Cheers! Ixocactus (talk) 12:10, 9 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Checking the book, I realized that there are many other interesting pictures. If you need more of them I can extract its. Cheers! Ixocactus (talk) 12:16, 9 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! If you'd have time to extract more images it would be good, the book (w:Argonauts of the Western Pacific) is an important classic and illustrations from it may be valuable (some are explicitly referred to in the literature reviewed). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 13:15, 9 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Great idea @Piotrus: ! I forget the wonderful pictures by Malinowski. I have cropped to Plate XX until now, but I will extract all of them. Cheers! Ixocactus (talk) 14:36, 9 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Great! I'll try to tag objects on them soon. Few days ago we had no free images returned for my search Malinowski+tent or such, now we do :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 02:42, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Piotrus: ! Now I thinking about the legends by Malinowski. What looks better? Cropped with File:Plate VI - Argonauts of the western Pacific 1922 (page 78 crop).jpg or without File:Plate IX - Argonauts of the western Pacific 1922 (page 94 crop).jpg the captions? Ixocactus (talk) 03:40, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not sure what do you mean by "better", but I'd suggest splitting images from pages that have 2 so that each image has its own file. Generally pages are not useful for illustrations, and combining images make categorization different too.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 06:32, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Hi can you check for a specfic artist, engraver or illustrator credit, and update the file description page accordingly? {{Book}} is intended to be used for entire documents such as books or manuscripts, and it's use on a single image is misleading. A template like {{Photograph}} would be more appropriate.

It would also be appreciated if you could check for other 'extracted' images you uploaded, which may be using the {{Book}} template in error.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:49, 20 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ShakespeareFan00! I understand your concerning with the wrong templates. But I can't realize what's the problem in real life for this. The images are extracted with Commons:CropTool and I think that our fellow developers considered this when they made the tool. Since I am only a user of this tool I suggest you to contact people that developed the tool to suggest the necessary improvements. By the way, what's your interest in these photos specifically? I encountered the book after a travel on that region in my native state. I always try include free content about Minas Gerais in our Wikimedia projects. Cheers! I have no interest in the photos themselves. I am trying to improve the catalog and 'de-pollute' certian categories. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:05, 20 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
