Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

City Archives photos

Please do not upload photos from the City of Portland archives with templates claiming that they have been published (e.g. before 1923, or between 1923 and 1977 without a copyright notice), unless you can cite a book or other publication (with author, year of publication, etc.) to back up that claim. Being in a city's archives does not constitute "publication". I'd love to see these photos available on Commons for use in Wikipedia articles, but only if it can be done legally. I did not accuse you of violating copyright, but merely indicated that (several of) your uploads may be copyvios, and politely asked that you provide more information on the image pages. Whatever info. you found personally at the archives regarding copyright status is irrelevant if none of it is included on the image pages at Commons. Additional info. is needed, as I said. Replying to your posts left on my talk page: I believe your broad definition of publication is inaccurate from a legal standpoint, but I'm no expert. Also, I said nothing about online sourcing. Persons uploading under the licenses you used are expected to note where the publication that makes the photo PD took place: publication title, year/date and author or publisher (and ideally page number) – and these can be books, newspapers, etc. (offline sources, but available at public libraries). Source of PARC photos

I have a question about photos you uploaded from the City of Portland Archives such as File:Aerial of Swan Island Municipal Airport (1).JPG and File:Swan Island Airport from the air.JPG: Did you find these photos through the City's online records search or are they scans of physical images from the archives? I've posted these Efile links on the individual file discussion pages when I could find them—would you mind checking that I've identified the original pictures correctly? I wasn't able to find sources for File:Swan Island Municipal Airport terminal.jpg or the two pictures from the Oregon Historical Society, File:Swan Island Municipal Airport (1).jpg and File:Swan Island Municipal Airport takeoff.jpg. • Did you crop File:Aerial of Swan Island Municipal Airport (2)..JPG from PARC A2005-005.1397.2, or is this an unaltered photograph from a different PARC record?
• Did you crop File:Swan Island Airport from the air.JPG from PARC A2005-001.640, or is this an unaltered photograph from a different PARC record?
• What is the source of File:Swan Island Municipal Airport terminal.jpg? I can't find this photo on Efiles.
• Just so I'm sure, you didn't upload the OHS photos from here or here?

Kid Nichols image reversed

Hi, I noticed that the image here of professional baseball pitcher Kid Nichols appears to be mirrored. Nichols was a right-handed pitcher, yet appears to have the baseball glove on his right hand in the image; also, in 1904, Nichols pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, and I believe the partial characters visible on his uniform are consistent with a mirror-image of ST.
