Extension

edit

I think we're overdue for a voting extension. I've talked to some people and seen some interest. So far, I've identified what I think we need, which I'll write up in a page with pictures soon. However, I'd love to hear any ideas; this would be a photo contest-specific thing. The frontend interface will require JavaScript and there's some neat interaction stuff we could do, especially with a strong base system. I'll post more info later. theMONO 03:42, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any progress on this? --99of9 (talk) 11:50, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Artwork

edit

I feel that we might benefit from having an "art reproduction of the year" parallel contest, for all the great images of works of art, which to me feel are in a different category than POTY. I participated in the later voting last year, and thus didnt see any (or many, i dont recall) art reproductions in the final selections. It looks like we always end up choosing a photo of something in the "real world", rather than an image of a work of art. Just now, i didnt vote for any artworks, cause it didnt feel right to me to have the Mona Lisa up against a bird. Has anyone else ever brought up this idea?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:51, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I always wondered about this mixture. If you work-out something concrete, I think there should be a way to spilt off non-photographic works. -- RE rillke questions? 13:18, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Complaining as usual :)

edit

As I did in the previous years, because I truly miss a category where only works by Wikimedians can be seen and voted. Anybody else thinking likewise? --Elitre (talk) 11:04, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Often it is not easy to determine whether someone has a Wikimedia account. Lot's of the more professional photographers have but only upload to Flickr. Also, COM:FPC does not distinguish. I will not stop you, if you like to create such a category. Offering should be no problem but when it comes to the rules (at least one picture from each category), this category has to be excluded. Otherwise pictures in there would have an advantage. -- RE rillke questions? 13:24, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
As someone who pretty much only uploads others' free use works to Commons, I like this idea. I would have it be run as a "parallel-on-the-same-page" contest, though, so we have a "best of Commons" and "best of Commoners'." --Philosopher Let us reason together. 02:04, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
The problem is not that the committee would not support such ideas but that there is no one who has time to create such galleries and a parallel contest and that there is no specific concept, yet. -- RE rillke questions? 08:29, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, and I suspect such a change would probably be best if "done for next time" anyway. I don't have time to set it up now, either - just thought it was an interesting idea. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:56, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Extracting username gadget

edit

Is there a gadget to extract username automatically for eligibility checking tool? Something like ja:Template:UserName and ja:MediaWiki:Gadget-UsernameReplace.js?--miya (talk) 16:05, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

No, not yet on Commons. But if wanted, this could be included in POTY-App. But the App checks eligibility and you can view your status in MyPOTY (next to the logout link). -- RE rillke questions? 21:08, 28 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

deadlines for r1

edit

hi:

if the deadline for r1 voting is still jun 04 2012, then why are we still in beta & NOT advertising on the other wikis?

this gives people less than 1 week to vote. not good!

maybe it is time to rethink the end-date for voting?

Lx 121 (talk) 21:54, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I always considered the end-date of R1 as a minimum. Also, I asked on Meta for global banners but this seems to be a bit tricky because I can't set up them myself; it needs a meta-admin who is willing to create and config them. -- RE rillke questions? 06:24, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Then let's make it longer - the 7th of June? The closing time needs to be 21:00 UTC for the convenience of the author of the script to do closing work on his/her timezone, i hear.--miya (talk) 16:46, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
still no notices up @ wp/en. as regards the end-date for r1, my feeling is that we should probably have a minimum of 7 days (1 week) of voting with the notices up @ all eligible wiki-projects (assuming we are trying to generate interest & votes beyond commons' regular editors). anything less than 7 full days for everybody to vote seems "rushed". Lx 121 (talk) 08:40, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, yes, let's make it longer. -- RE rillke questions? 19:44, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
if that's an official decision, the r1 end-date in the poty header should be changed. STILL no notices up @ wp/en; will try surfing other projects, but could somebody light a fire under a few admins there? i don't know who to ask... Lx 121 (talk) 05:31, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Has anyone thrown a request for a notice up at en:WP:AN? I'd throw one up myself, but I'm not quite sure what kind of notice to request. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 06:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Announcement and notices

edit
Announcement

It was announced Wikimedia-l (May 30 14:16:16 UTC). I posted to Commons-l. Will you post similiar announcement to the mailing list of your languages? --miya (talk) 08:10, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Notices
  • I wonder why the contest was not announced on the language and meta wikis, like in previous versions. The Main pages and Community portals are obvious places but it could also be done on en:FPC and corresponding foruns in the other wikis. Is it only my impression that the number of voters this year is much less than before? -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 12:40, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • We expected the Central notice would announce POTY all over Wikimedia, but it would not come out so far (sorry but I can't understand why). Will you help announce the contest on your wikis? I don't know how to announce except jawp. Use the banner below if you like. Thanks in advance.--miya (talk) 15:35, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I posted a request to en:Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard - is it the right way and the right place to request?--miya (talk) 16:14, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Since the request should be fairly routine, that should be the right place. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 03:32, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
This may be an isolated problem at en but it's very frustrating that this notice does not have a "dismiss" or "hide" link. ElKevbo (talk) 17:15, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
There were changes and I can see a dismiss-link that works. -- RE rillke questions? 20:40, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Obviously one has to have connections. That's pretty frustrating. -- RE rillke questions? 14:53, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unknown script error on banner (?)

edit
Hi there, I'm getting a script error when logged in at the top of the page, above the banner (the banner does not show at all on the Main Page for some reason, on other pages I get both the banner advertising the vote AND the script). See screenshot
. Cheers notafish }<';> 19:26, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Are you using Google-calendar-browser-extention? On the main page the banner and the first heading are hidden by another script (this seems to be intention).
Where do you get this script error? Only on file description pages?

path to the galleries is not clear enough

edit

Could the link to the galleries be a bit more highlighted and/or explicitly mentioned in the introduction? Some voters might not be well-guided from the landing page at a first glance. This was how I got lost before getting to the galleries page: I checked I was in the right page ("I want vote"), got an overview of how the contest will work by reading through "When can I vote?" and "Who can vote?" and then got lost. After I randomly visited some more pages in the template, I eventually found that I should go to Galleries. I'm sorry if I missed an easier path. --whym (talk) 12:47, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Support. The same thing happened to me. --McZusatz (talk) 13:08, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Support - I think it's pretty confusing. Also, the voting doesn't work for the 'ALL' galleries doesn't work. Why can't we simply have a list of all pictures, like last year? Husky (talk to me) 11:46, 5 June 2012 (UTC) Signature is not in accordance with COM:Signature#Transclusion of templates. -- RE rillke questions? 14:50, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
  1. I don't know why we have dozens of different galleries. The topic galleries are enough, IMHO. But now it is too late.
  2. User should read the rules carefully before starting to click buttons. If users read them carefully, they will find the galleries. On the other hand the App now checks likely everything, so it's not that important anymore. Maybe a historic relict. I just noticed that some users didn't notice that they could vote for multiple pictures in R1. Any ideas how to make them aware of this fact in the galleries? -- RE rillke questions? 14:50, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Rillke, regarding your last point, here are a couple of ideas:
  • Show, after the first vote, an alert saying something like "Thank you for voting. Did you know that you can vote for more than one pictures in Round 1? [let me continue voting][no thanks, I'm done]", or "Thank you for voting. You can continue voting for other pictures in this gallery, visit and vote in other galleries, or just leave here". I would prefer it to be shown only once after the first vote and automatically disappear in 5 secs or so.
  • Show a similar notice in the splash shown when loading the app.
  • Include it in the site notice. If the space is not enough, consider randomly switching the current one and the 'you-can-vote-more-than-once' one.
Does any of these sound appropriate? --whym (talk) 11:53, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Implemented. Thank you! -- RE rillke questions? 21:36, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

In fact it is not too late - changing own votes three days later is absolutely no problem. Kersti (talk) 21:26, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You can change as long as the contest is open. -- RE rillke questions? 21:30, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why does JavaScript take so long to load?

edit

Javascript seems to be interfering. Whole thing loads slowly. Why once a gallery is chosen, does a javascript spinning thing appear, and then take forever to go away? MathewTownsend (talk) 13:22, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

For me, it takes about 12s after I typed the URL into the address bar and clicked enter. I own a slow machine and have a fast connection.
It depends on the server-speed, your computer's speed, your browser-type and your browser's settings.
Basically it's so slow because of user's stupidity and because it was written in 2 weeks after one Committee member didn't wrote the voting extension that was advertised before so there is room for improvement in scheduling the tasks the App performs.
It checks everything a user could do wrong. The features are mentioned at Help:EnhancedPOTY.js. Just for example: Recently a user complained at another script that there was no anon-edit-warning and his IP was saved.
So, we could for example omit the check for edit-rate limits or blocks (800ms) but then, when user clicks the vote-button and receives an error, we wouldn't gain anything. We could also omit loading translations, this would save us again 800ms, but... or the randomization of files (800ms), or adding vote-buttons (800ms), adding slideshow link, resize bar, styling (1200ms), checking your eligibility (1200ms-6000ms), doing the API-edit request directly and hoping that everything works fine (300ms), using alert (a modal message box) giving you feedback that your vote has saved instead of the overlay (300ms), only supporting one browser (?) instead of Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera.
We could shuffle the pictures the usual way but this would mean that you would get a different view each time you visit a gallery.
We could omit checking whether the user is logged-in and dislay a message with a login-link.
Then we will have a much faster loading something.
You are welcome to improve the App. It's located at MediaWiki:EnhancedPOTY.js. If you want to run POTY next year, you are of course free to do it the way you like. My goal was it, to reduce the number of invalid votes to a minimum and to avoid unexpected behaviour (like clicking on an enabled button and receiving an error message).
You can also turn off JavaScript if you don't like it, or add it to your ad-blocker. -- RE rillke questions? 14:34, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unclear rules

edit

Can someone please explain the meaning of the second rule below? Does it imply that each category must have at least a picture on the final? If that is the case the Englisg should be improved...

  • The top 32 images from Round 1, by number of votes, from any category will go to the final round - the categories are irrelevant when it comes to counting the votes.
  • If category #1 are not in the top 32s, they will be also promoted to the Final to guarantees a diverse final -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 10:54, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also, what to do when there are several pictures with the same number of votes around place 32? I really think that these rules should be re-written before the final is announced. Alvesgaspar (talk) 10:58, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to make changes. I am not a native speaker. -- RE rillke questions? 11:01, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Did you know...

edit
  • ...that there are 13 subject categories at 2011's Picture of the Year competition? (And four that refer to specific formats.)
  • ...that twelve of the 32 current top-ranking POTY candidates are either outdoor views of nature (7) or constructions (5), while a further 3 are nature views with a vehicle or animal as a minor feature?
  • ...that there are no cluse-up pictures among nature views?
  • ...that except for the 32 top-ranked media overall, only the top one of each category will be included in round 2?

I will cross-post this, as it's not clear to me which one of these many talk pages actually gets read. Certainly, the rate of replies could be higher.

I'm afraid I confused these files which have similar filenames. --miya (talk) 17:01, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The cause i failed sorting seems that some filenames (in my Excel table) had underbar "_" and others had not.--miya (talk) 17:22, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Date for the Final

edit

If there are no more errors especially about the finalists (Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Results/R1), when can we start the Final round? For example, from 14 June 21:00 to 21 June 21:00 (UTC)? --miya (talk) 05:15, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK (but I would say to at least 21 June 21:00 (UTC)) so we can decide later, if we don't have enough voters whether we run it longer. -- RE rillke questions? 08:27, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, let's make it as "open at any time on 14 or 15 June (UTC) when everything be ready", and "close on 21 June 23:59(UTC) or later".--miya (talk) 23:10, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think it will be better to define the end more exact. My proposal: start time 14/15 June or ???, and the end time: two weeks later. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 00:30, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please explain why this is better. Also miya wants the results before wikimania starts and one guy from the WMF-fan-shop wanted to print T-shirts before that date. -- RE rillke questions? 07:37, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I sincerely hope our marvelous POTYs to be printed, displayed and admired on the Wikimania venue. Yet I agree to "it will be better to define the end more exact". --miya (talk) 09:06, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

How about ending on next Saturday (23 June 21:00 UTC) ? We are going to announce Round 2 on this Saturday (16 June) on mailing lists and sitenotices (if central notice is not available), and (at least) a full one week after announcements may be preferable for the voting period.--miya (talk) 21:58, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Results?

edit

When I look in my contributions, I find, that I changed Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Finalists/Lanzarote 3 Luc Viatour.jpg with my vote. But there is no category in this page and from the Overview page Commons:Valued image candidates/candidate list I don't find links to these subpages so that I don't know, how to find the rest on the results. When I click on the button "Statistic" (I think in english it is called "statistics") the browser gets grey for a while but afterwards nothing happens. --Kersti (talk) 07:34, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

From Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/FAQ

[The statistics] are provided to show trends but are not necessarily correct. Invalid candidates and votes are included. Use them with care like you should do with all statistics you didn't fake yourself :-) I started collecting them on 2012-05-31 and took about 3 snapshots per day. So voting a file will not immediately change them.

Commons:Valued image candidates are not related to POTY. Featured Picturess are shown in POTY. Results of round 1 are on Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Results/R1/Finalists. -- RE rillke questions? 10:07, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your answer is not a answer to my question.

--Kersti (talk) 18:38, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's because your browser "turns grey". You would find those links in the Statics pop-up. --McZusatz (talk) 21:29, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Than why don't you use a simple link (next year)? There is no reason to use more complicated functions in this case, which may not work on all browsers. --Kersti (talk) 08:05, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
You find more pages like Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Finalists/Lanzarote 3 Luc Viatour.jpg from Special:Prefixindex/Picture of the Year/2011/Finalists. But you must only vote for ONE picture. This page should work with a text browser or even the oldest or buggiest ones. Ask your browser vendor, to support CSS 2.0 properly, please. -- RE rillke questions? 16:41, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The problem is another one: I will have to buy a new computer first. Than I would be able to use a new version of the browser. --Kersti (talk) 18:10, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Consider buying a less restrictive computer allowing you to install the browser you want. -- RE rillke questions? 18:33, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The main problem is, that the Computer is OLD, not that somethin is too restrictive. Kersti (talk) 20:18, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have blacklisted camino now. You should be able to see the yellow buttons that take you to each voting page. (or at least in 3h/ after purging the browser's cache) -- RE rillke questions? 18:33, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
That doesn't make it better - voting worked without blacklisting perfectly good and I can't find the statistics in this view either - and where did you blacklist Camino? I don't know if this related to this blacklisting but the edit buttons over and below the edit form don't work now. Kersti (talk) 20:25, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
"I can't find the statistics in this view either". If it doesn't work in your browser, I can't change it (don't have a Mac for testing). But thanks for the feedback, I will re-enable easy voting for this browser.
I am not sure which edit buttons you are referring to. If they don't work on this page, I can say for sure that it's unrelated. Regards -- RE rillke questions? 20:49, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Than it is unrelated - I am referring to the normal edit buttons used in Monobook for adding spezal characters and Wiki-markup. Kersti (talk) 20:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
You solved this problem once for mei (here) - maybe you could do it again? Kersti (talk) 07:15, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The results of R2 (Final)

Thanks to Rillke's javascript and followup and Kalan's counting tool, checking of the Final result was done automatically. There were only 2 ineligible voters but it seems their votes don't affect the Final result. (MediaWiki talk:EnhancedPOTY.js#False positive) Please check the result in the pages below.(Thanks Beria for arranging result pages)

If they are ok, we can include Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Results/R2 to the top page (Commons:Picture of the Year/2011) and announce the Final result. Great thanks to all people who joined this contest.--miya (talk) 09:36, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Crappy user experience

edit

Hello folks !

Here I tell you the crappy user experience I had.

I come on Wikimedia Commons. A banner invites me to vote for my favourite picture. OK, let's vote ! I land on a page with some pictures. But I cannot vote. The Vote button is disabled. Why ? No clue. I look around. Nothing useful. Ah, I see a link I need help. I click it, hoping for live help. No live help. I can post a question, that's it. But I don't want to. I look at the voting — so to speak — page. The disabled Vote button is not even properly disabled. The button is grey. Thanks to another button, grey too but a little shinier, I can tell that the Vote button is disabled. But when I fly over the button with my mouse, it gets darker. That's something to avoid in a disabled button. Even worse : when I click the button, it becomes even darker. That's really wrong for a disabled button.

It would be nice to improve that.

Maybe the next time I come on Wikimedia Commons I will be invited to stuff that work, who knows ?

--Nnemo (talk) 16:02, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

It seems that your accounts have not been unified, and the account eligibility tool can't decide which wiki to consider. That's dumb, since even considered on its own, your Commons account would be eligible. The general problem could be fixed by having our code check for eligibility on Commons before broadening the search to other wikis, but in the meantime you could try unifying your accounts. --Avenue (talk) 01:45, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Nothing is "dumb". the user is simply not eligible to vote, not even on Commons. The first thing, POTY-App does is checking the local eligibility, BTW. Of course I could display a big messagebox in bold letters why a user is not eligible after the tool found it. But I thought humans are intelligent enough to find Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Eligibility. -- RE rillke questions? 16:27, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I am the dumb one. I assumed the stalk toy link on the account eligibility page also filtered by date. If Nnemo has the same username on frwiki or enwiki, I think unifying the accounts should still help them. --Avenue (talk) 22:18, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
No one is "dumb". I apologize if you felt offended. There could be, indeed, a link to Special:MergeAccount. -- RE rillke questions? 06:24, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Not offended, just embarrassed for my mistake. :-) --Avenue (talk) 07:42, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I am pretty sure that I am eligible. And if I were not eligible, it would make more sense not to invite me to vote. --Nnemo (talk) 18:36, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
So we should check the eligibility of each visitor on Commons and then display the banner? Not impossible, but I am not sure the API will be happy receiving tons of requests. -- RE rillke questions? 18:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Why are you sure you are eligible? Do you have 76 edits before 2012-04-01 on Commons or with another account that is attached through SUL to your account on Commons? The App can't assume that accounts with the same name on other Wikis belong to you. Stefan4 and Stefan2 are the best samples. So please follow the advice I gave below. -- RE rillke questions? 18:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please unify your account. After you did so, please click the MyPOTY-link (near the My Contribs - Link) and let the App recheck your eligibility. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 06:24, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
There is a MyPOTY-link when you are on a gallery that tells you exactly why you can't vote. I can't do anything with the toolserver Helpsystem: Neither do I have a login nor can I config something there. Ask Mono why nothing works there. -- RE rillke questions? 16:21, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Now I have looked at the link My POTY, but that did not help much. I have invited Mono to the discussion. --Nnemo (talk) 18:36, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
If you want to complain about the jQuery UI-theme used by MediaWiki, Bugzilla - The MediaWiki bug tracker - is the right place (the symptoms with the gray button belong there. But there are more serious issues there that weren't be addressed for a longer time, so don't expect a solution in between 6 months. -- RE rillke questions? 16:31, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Are image randomised?

edit

Having the images in the same order for everyone is going to significantly bias the vote. Are they randomised, or cyclic? I only ask because I tried refreshing the page, and got the same order. --Naught101 (talk) 04:19, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

They are randomized. You can test this by purging the page ([1]). They show up in the same order when you refresh the page so as not to confuse voters who leave the page, as they may wish to look at the details of a file and come back to the voting page. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:44, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. We are using a seeded randomisation. The seed is the user name. More information about POTY-App are at Help:EnhancedPOTY.js. -- RE rillke questions? 06:47, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Only about 1150 votes in the final

edit
No recognizable saturation

Should we run it longer? -- RE rillke questions? 18:24, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Per day we get about 200 votes. No recognizable saturation, yet. -- RE rillke questions? 19:20, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think yes. Make it one week longer. Yann (talk) 19:42, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I failed to comment here before closing the Final, but it is not good to change the date (which we formally announced in the POTY2011/header) in the last few hours. And over 1000 voters are good enough i feel.--miya (talk) 15:49, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
