Frequency and spatially chirped free-electron laser pulses / Reiche, S (PSI, Villigen) ; Bacellar, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Bougiatioti, P (PSI, Villigen) ; Cirelli, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Dijkstal, P (PSI, Villigen ; DESY) ; Ferrari, E (PSI, Villigen ; DESY) ; Juranic, P (PSI, Villigen) ; Knopp, G ; Malyzhenkov, 2A (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Milne, C (PSI, Villigen ; European XFEL, Hamburg) et al.
We have produced hard x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses, which are chirped both in photon energy and in spatial position. The experiments have been carried out at the hard x-ray beamline Aramis at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland [...]

An X-ray free-electron laser with a highly configurable undulator and integrated chicanes for tailored pulse properties / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Haddad, Andre Al (PSI, Villigen) ; Arrell, Christopher (PSI, Villigen) ; Augustin, Sven (PSI, Villigen) ; Boll, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Bostedt, Christoph (PSI, Villigen ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Calvi, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Cavalieri, Adrian L (PSI, Villigen ; Bern U.) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen) ; Dax, Andreas (PSI, Villigen) et al.
X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) are state-of-the-art scientific tools capable to study matter on the scale of atomic processes. Since the initial operation of X-ray FELs more than a decade ago, several facilities with upgraded performance have been put in operation. [...]

SwissFEL Aramis beamline photon diagnostics / Juranic, Pavle (PSI, Villigen) ; Rehanek, Jens (PSI, Villigen) ; Arrell, Christopher A (PSI, Villigen) ; Pradervand, Claude (PSI, Villigen) ; Cassar, Ariana (U. Malta) ; Calvi, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Ischebeck, Rasmus (PSI, Villigen) ; Erny, Christian (PSI, Villigen) ; Heimgartner, Peter (PSI, Villigen) ; Gorgisyan, Ishkhan (CERN) et al.
The SwissFEL Aramis beamline, covering the photon energies between 1.77 keV and 12.7 keV, features a suite of online photon diagnostics tools to help both users and FEL operators in analysing data and optimizing experimental and beamline performance. Scientists will be able to obtain information about the flux, spectrum, position, pulse length, and arrival time jitter versus the experimental laser for every photon pulse, with further information about beam shape and size available through the use of destructive screens. Sub-femtosecond time-resolved measurements of electron bunches with a C-band radio-frequency deflector in x-ray free-electron lasers / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen)
Time-resolved diagnostics are fundamental for x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). Radio-frequency (RF) transverse deflector structures (TDSs) are typically employed to characterize the temporal properties of the electron beams driving FELs. [...]

Coherent sub-femtosecond soft x-ray free-electron laser pulses with nonlinear compression / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Arrell, Christopher (PSI, Villigen) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen) ; Reiche, Sven (PSI, Villigen) ; Schietinger, Thomas (PSI, Villigen) ; Wang, Guanglei (PSI, Villigen)
We demonstrate the generation of coherent soft x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses with a duration below 1 fs using nonlinear compression with a low-charge electron beam (10 pC). The approach is simple, and it does not require any special hardware, so it can be readily implemented at any x-ray FEL facility. [...]

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser Project at DESY / Schwarz, Andreas
On February 5, 2003, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research decided that the X-ray free-electron laser XFEL, proposed by the International TESLA Collaboration, should be realized as a European project and located at DESY/Hamburg. The ministry also announced that in view of the locational advantage, Germany is prepared to cover half of the investment and personnel costs for the XFEL. [...]

The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and test bed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the x-ray Free Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including atransverse deflecting rf cavity.
