Particle physics applications of the AWAKE acceleration scheme / Wing, Matthew (University of London (GB)) ; Caldwell, Allen Christopher (Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik (DE)) ; Chappell, James Anthony (University of London (GB)) ; Crivelli, Paolo (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Depero, Emilio (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Gall, Jonathan (CERN) ; Gninenko, Sergei (Russian Academy of Sciences (RU)) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Hartin, Anthony (University of London (GB)) ; Keeble, Fearghus Robert (University of London (GB)) et al.
The AWAKE experiment had a very successful Run 1 (2016-8), demonstrating proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration for the first time, through the observation of the modulation of a long proton bunch into micro-bunches and the acceleration of electrons up to 2 GeV in 10 m of plasma. The aims of AWAKE Run 2 (2021-4) are to have high-charge bunches of electrons accelerated to high energy, about 10 GeV, maintaining beam quality through the plasma and showing that the process is scalable. AWAKE++: The AWAKE Acceleration Scheme for New Particle Physics Experiments at CERN / NA64 collaboration
The AWAKE experiment reached all planned milestones during Run 1 (2016-18), notably the demonstration of strong plasma wakes generated by proton beams and the acceleration of externally injected electrons to multi-GeV energy levels in the proton driven plasma wakefields. During Run~2 (2021 - 2024) AWAKE aims to demonstrate the scalability and the acceleration of electrons to high energies while maintaining the beam quality. [...]

The Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment (AWAKE) is a proof-of-principle R&D; experiment at CERN. It is the world’s first proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment, using a high-energy proton bunch to drive a plasma wakefield for electron beam acceleration. [...]

Beam studies and experimental facility for the AWAKE experiment at CERN / Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Petrenko, Alexey (CERN) ; Timko, Helga (CERN) ; Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Esteban Müller, Juan (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Meddahi, Malika (CERN) et al.
A Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment has been proposed as an approach to eventually accelerate an electron beam to the TeV energy range in a single plasma section. To verify this novel technique, a proof of principle R&D; experiment, AWAKE, is planned at CERN using 400 GeV proton bunches from the SPS. [...]

The AWAKE experiment at CERN will be the first proof-of-principle demonstration of the proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration using the 400 GeV proton beam extracted from the SPS accelerator. The plasma wakefield will be driven by a sequence of sub-millimeter long micro-bunches produced as a result of the self-modulation instability (SMI) of the 12 cm long SPS proton bunch in the 10 m long rubidium plasma with a density corresponding to the plasma wavelength of around 1 mm. Awake Run 2 at CERN / Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN)
The AWAKE Run 2 experiment, starting in 2021 at CERN, aims to achieve high-charge bunches of electrons accelerated to high energy (~10 GeV) while maintaining beam quality. AWAKE Run 2 also aims to show that the process is scalable so that, by the end of the run, the AWAKE-scheme technology could be used for first particle physics applications. [...]

Calibration of the AWAKE electron spectrometer with electrons derived from a partially stripped ion beam / Cooke, David (University Coll. London) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Bauche, Jeremie (CERN) ; Cascella, Michele (University Coll. London) ; Chappell, James (University Coll. London) ; Gorgisyan, Ishkhan (CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Jolly, Simon (University Coll. London) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Keeble, Fearghus (University Coll. London) et al.
The electron spectrometer for the Advanced Wakefield (AWAKE) experiment at CERN has been tested using an electron beam derived from partially-stripped ions accelerated in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The remaining electrons are stripped by passage of the beam through a thin screen upstream from the spectrometer, and using knowledge of the ion beam charge and energy, models of the spectrometer response could be verified..
