A proposed demonstration of an experiment of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration based on CERN SPS / Xia, G (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Assmann, R (CERN) ; Fonseca, R A (IST, Lisbon (main)) ; Huang, C (Los Alamos) ; Mori, W (UCLA, Los Angeles (main)) ; Silva, L O (IST, Lisbon (main)) ; Vieira, J (IST, Lisbon (main)) ; Zimmermann, F (CERN) ; Muggli, P (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) /PPWFA
The proton bunch-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) has been proposed as an approach to accelerate an electron beam to the TeV energy regime in a single plasma section. An experimental program has been recently proposed to demonstrate the capability of proton-driven PWFA by using existing proton beams from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) accelerator complex. Laser Wakefield Accelerators / Najmudin, Z. (JAI, UK ; Imperial Coll., London)
The one-dimensional wakefield generation equations are solved for increasing levels of non-linearity, to demonstrate how they contribute to the overall behaviour of a non-linear wakefield in a plasma. The effect of laser guiding is also studied as a way to increase the interaction length of a laser wakefield accelerator..

Laser-driven Plasma Wakefield: Propagation Effects / Cros, B. (LPGP, Orsay)
In the frame of laser-driven wakefield acceleration, the main characteristics oflaser propagation and plasma wave excitation are described, with an emphasis onthe role of propagation distance for electron acceleration. To optimizeinteraction length and maximize energy gain, operation at low plasma density isthe most promising regime for achieving ultra-relativistic energies. [...]

Nanoplasmonic Accelerators Towards Tens of TeraVolts per Meter Gradients Using Nanomaterials / Sahai, Aakash A (Colorado U., Denver) ; Golkowski, Mark (Colorado U., Denver) ; Harid, Vijay (Colorado U., Denver) ; Joshi, Chan (UCLA) ; Katsouleas, Tom (Connecticut U.) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Resta-López, Javier (Valencia U.) ; Taborek, Peter (UC, Irvine) ; Thomas, Alexander (Michigan U.) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN)
Ultra-high gradients which are critical for future advances in high-energy physics, have so far relied on plasma and dielectric accelerating structures. While bulk crystals were predicted to offer unparalleled TV/m gradients that are at least two orders of magnitude higher than gaseous plasmas, crystal-based acceleration has not been realized in practice. Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration in AWAKE / AWAKE Collaboration
In this article, we briefly summarize the experiments performed during the first Run of the Advanced Wakefield Experiment, AWAKE, at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The final goal of AWAKE Run 1 (2013 - 2018) was to demonstrate that 10-20 MeV electrons can be accelerated to GeV-energies in a plasma wakefield driven by a highly-relativistic self-modulated proton bunch. Loading of Wakefields in a Plasma Accelerator Section Driven by a Self-Modulated Proton Beam / Berglyd Olsen, Veronica (U. Oslo (main)) ; Adli, Erik (U. Oslo (main)) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Vieira, Jorge (Lisbon, IST)
Using parameters from the AWAKE project and particle-in-cell simulations we investigate beam loading of a plasma wake driven by a self-modulated proton beam. Addressing the case of injection of an electron witness bunch after the drive beam has already experienced self-modulation in a previous plasma, we optimise witness bunch parameters of size, charge and injection phase to maximise energy gain and minimise relative energy spread and emittance of the accelerated bunch..
