Development and commissioning of ion-optical elements for ion and antiproton beams with energies up to 5 keV
/ Klink, Clara (Darmstadt, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Schlaich, Moritz (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Fischer, Jonas (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Obertelli, Alexandre (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Schmidt, Alexander (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Wienholtz, Frank (Darmstadt, Tech. U.)
In nuclear and atomic physics experiments, charged ion beams often need to be guided from the ion production to the experimental site. In the PUMA experiment, an ion source beamline was developed, which can be operated with up to \SI5{\kilo\electronvolt} beam energy at a base pressure of 10−9 mbar or better. [...]

We report on the design and characterization of an antiproton deceleration beamline, based on a pulsed drift tube, for the PUMA experiment at the Antimatter Factory at CERN. The design has been tailored to high-voltage (100 kV) and ultra-high vacuum (below 10−10 mbar) conditions. [...]

A multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the offline ion source of the PUMA experiment

The antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation experiment (PUMA) at CERN aims at investigating the nucleon composition in the matter density tail of radioactive as well as stable isotopes by use of low-energy antiproton-nucleon annihilation processes. For this purpose, antiprotons provided by the Extra Low ENergy Antiproton (ELENA) facility will be trapped together with the ions of interest. [...]

From Calcium to Cadmium: Testing the Pairing Functional through Charge Radii Measurements of 100−130Cd

Differences in mean-square nuclear charge radii of 100–130Cd are extracted from high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy of the 5s2 S1/2→5p2 P3/2 transition of the ion and from the 5s5p3P2→5s6s3S1 transition in atomic Cd. The radii show a smooth parabolic behavior on top of a linear trend and a regular odd-even staggering across the almost complete sdgh shell. [...]

Landau damping of transverse head-tail instabilities with a pulsed electron lens in hadron synchrotrons
/ Gubaidulin, Vadim (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Kornilov, Vladimir (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Boine-Frankenheim, Oliver (Darmstadt, Tech. U. ; Darmstadt, GSI) ; Métral, Elias (CERN)
A pulsed electron lens produces a betatron tune shift along a hadron bunch as a function of the longitudinal coordinates, which is a longitudinal detuning. An example of transverse detuning are the tune shifts due to octupole magnets. [...]

PUMA, antiProton unstable matter annihilation
/ PUMA Collaboration
PUMA, antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation, is a nuclear-physics experiment at CERN aiming at probing the surface properties of stable and rare isotopes by use of low-energy antiprotons. Low-energy antiprotons offer a very unique sensitivity to the neutron and proton densities at the annihilation site, i.e. [...]

Lifetimes of intermediate-spin states in two rotational bands of 99Zr have been measured. These states were populated following the neutron-induced fission of 235U at the PF1B beamline of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. [...]

Five different nanostructured target materials were tested and operated at ISOLDE in the year of 2014, three of them being carbon-based nanocomposites. In most cases such target materials have higher radioisotope intensities than standard targets and with apparently longer release characteristics. [...]

Indium doped zinc oxide, ZnO(In), is a promising scintillation material for nanosecond-fast beam monitoring and counting heavy ions of MeV energy and above. We investigated the ionoluminescence and UV/Vis light transmission spectra that occur in ZnO(In) ceramic exposed to 4.8 MeV/u 48Ca and 197Au ions up to 5×1012 and 2×1011 ions/cm2, respectively. [...]
