LHC injection kickers (MKI) are pulsed at high voltage to achieve magnetic field pulses with fast rise time. The MKIs contain a beam screen to help shield their ferrite yoke from beam induced heating. [...]

Initial operational experience of an LHC injection kicker magnet upgraded for HL-LHC / Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Diaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Standen, Dylan (CERN) ; Favia, Giorgia (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, Tobias (CERN) ; Gomes Namora, Vasco (CERN)
The intensity of the HL-LHC beam will be twice that of LHC. Hence, an upgrade of the LHC injection kickers (MKIs) is necessary for HL-LHC to avoid excessive beam induced heating of the MKIs. [...]

Production and validation of the RF cooling damper for the LHC injection kickers / Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) ; Gerardin, Alexandre (CERN) ; Favia, Giorgia (CERN) ; Geisser, Jean-Marie (CERN) ; Scibor, Karol (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Diaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN)
Fast single-turn injection kicker systems deflect incoming beam onto the orbit of the LHC. The higher intensities of High Luminosity (HL) LHC beams are predicted to cause the ferrite yokes of the LHC injection kicker magnets (MKI), in their current configuration, to heat up to their Curie temperature. [...]

SPS injection kicker system: 2023 operational experience and upgrade proposals for high-luminosity LHC / Favia, Giorgia (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Standen, Dylan (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Feliciano, Luis (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Diaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) et al.
The SPS injection kicker system comprises twelve MKP-S (small aperture) modules and four MKP-L (large aperture) modules. An upgraded MKP-L magnet was installed in the SPS, during December 2022, in view of the higher beam intensity needed in the future for High-Luminosity-LHC. [...]

Mitigation of High Voltage Breakdown of the Beam Screen of a CERN SPS Injection Kicker Magnet / Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Díaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Feliciano, Luis (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) ; Namora, Vasco (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, Tobias (CERN) ; Standen, Dylan (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) et al.
The SPS injection kicker magnets (MKP) were developed in the 1970’s, before beam induced power deposition was considered an issue. These magnets are very lossy from a beam impedance perspective: this is expected to be an issue during SPS operation with the higher intensity beams needed for HL-LHC. [...]

Impedance and Thermal Studies of the LHC Injection Kicker Magnet Upgrade / Barnes, Michael J (CERN) ; Bjorkqvist, Oskar (CERN) ; Motschmann, Fritz (CERN)
The bunch intensities of High Luminosity (HL) LHC are predicted to lead to heating of the ferrite yokes of the LHC injection kicker magnets (MKI), in their current configuration, to their Curie temperature. Hence, the MKIs are being upgraded to meet the requirements of HL-LHC, which is planned to start in the mid-2020s. [...]

Longitudinal Impedance Analysis of an Upgraded LHC Injection Kicker Magnet / Vlachodimitropoulos, Vasileios (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Vega Cid, Lorena (CERN) ; Weterings, Wim (CERN) ; Ducimetière, L. (CERN)
Prior to Long Shutdown 1 (LS1) one of the LHC injection kickers (MKIs) occasionally exhibited high temperatures leading to significant turnaround times. After a successful impedance mitigation campaign during LS1, the MKI ferrite yokes have remained below their Curie point and have not limited LHC's availability. [...]

Beam coupling impedance mitigation is key in preventing intensity limitations due to beam stability issues, heating and sparking. In this framework, a very good example is the optimization of the SPS kickers beam-coupling impedance for beam-induced heating mitigation. [...]

The CERN SPS injection kicker magnets (MKP) were developed in the 1970's, before beam power deposition was considered an issue. There are two types of these magnets in the SPS: MKP-S (small aperture) and MKP-L (large aperture) versions. [...]

Preliminary Results from Validation Measurements of the Longitudinal Power Deposition Model for the LHC Injection Kicker Magnet / Vlachodimitropoulos, Vasileios (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Chmielinska, Agnieszka (CERN)
During Run 1 of the LHC, one of the injection kicker magnets (MKIs) exhibited an excessively high ferrite temperature, caused by coupling of the high intensity beam to the real impedance of the magnet. Beam-screen upgrades, implemented during Long Shutdown 1 (LS1), have been very effective in reducing beam coupling impedance and since then the MKIs have not limited LHC's availability. [...]
